Do a "first round" where each of the "Big 4" (UC, X, UD, OSU) play one of the other D1 schools in Ohio as a buy game, then the Ohio Big 4 move on to play the tournament format. If you really want to be "fair" then only advance the winners of each of the first round games to the 4 team tourney. Either way would give all of the state schools some exposure and the Big 4 lots of air time over a 3 game annual series.

Heck, you could even split the first round and the Tournament over multiple weeks to allow for maximum exposure/advertising/build up across the TV network that broadcasts it.

The Big 4 get a "buy" game that keeps the $$$$ in state, guarantees a pretty good early season crowd if not a sellout, highlights Ohio hoops and lets the TV networks and talking heads build up the series. Win, win, win.

Love that. Toledo, Akron, Miami and Ohio? Mix in Cleveland state and I’m sure there are others. Those games could be played at the big 4’s home gym a couple days before the big 4 tourney at rotating sites.

I’m for anything that gets us playing Savannah state less.

Taking it one step further, how about a Tri-State classic with UL, UK, WKU, NKU (I am biased on this because I'm a big Norse fan), IU, Butler, Purdue, and ND.

This is false.

Exempt tournaments aren't allowed to have 2 teams from a conference in them. Exempt tournaments allow you to go beyond the 27 game limit. However, there is no rule against tournaments that aren't "exempt."

If this is only going to be in Columbus, this is a non-starter. It needs to be an event (similar to the cross-conference challenges) with two games per team. The event needs to rotate between off-campus arenas that are not directly affiliated with a university. This would be Quicken Arena in Cleveland, Nationwide in Columbus, and US Bank in Cincinnati (for the love of God I hope someone buys that place and renovates it).

Holding this in Columbus only perpetuates the falsehood that Columbus is the only place in the state that matters. That is far from the case academically, athletically, and economically.

It should rotate between Youngstown, Portsmouth and Lima and should be refed by SEC refs, to avoid all preferential treatment.

Ohio State is the only school that can make this work and I'm truly shocked that they have allowed the coach to pitch this idea. I'm amazed that OSU scheduled UC and that OSU is playing XU in a "secret scrimmage". Perhaps OSU now thinks its so far ahead of everyone else in academic prestige and cash that they can actually play the other schools? OSU is the school that would only play UC in Indianapolis of all places after the program was essentially shut down and never agreed to play again.

The team making out the best in the tournament idea is Dayton. UC and XU already get great non-conference games and already play each other. UD was left off the island and headed towards MAC level attention. If UD is able to get into this group it could save their program.

There are no Ohio teams in the OVC.

There are Horizon Conference teams.

If you did it by conferences, the best we could do would be six teams from Ohio (AAC, A-10, Big East, B1G, Horizon, MAC)

That would mean we could easily do a round-robin based tournament. Two groups of three, each team plays the other in their respective group, then 1st in one group plays the 1st in the other, 2nd vs. 2nd, and 3rd vs. 3rd. Essentially it would be the same as the Maui Invitational, just with all Ohio teams. You could probably throw in a contingency to split UC and XU and not allow them to play in the playoff just to be safe, though I bet if they were in separate groups they would more than likely never meet to begin with.

Anthony Grant talked this past weekend about the potential of playing OSU, UC, and Xavier.

Id be all for rotating the event between the 3 cities each year. Travel wouldn’t be bad at all and being a college basketball fan in general the other matchups would be intriguing enough to attend in person.

For Cincinnati, getting Dayton and OSU fans to converge on our city for a weekend once every 3 years would be a great benefit too.
