In basketball, we have won 25 or more games only ten times, if my count is right. Two of those times under Jeff Jones. Nothing wrong with shooting high I reckon. Boy, did Blaine have a good run before it went south, winning 28,24,24,18,25,27,27 & 22 before, well you know what happened.

We play more games in this day and age then we ever did before.

A 25 win season no longer means much as evidenced by neither of jeffs 25 win seasons resulted in NCAA bids.

10-15 years ago 25 wins was a huge deal. Now it means you were a pretty good team and nothing more.

I think making the NCAA every 4 years is a realistic goal which means Jones is a failure if we don't make it yet again this season.

IMHO this is spot on!
Me too, for hoops. I think we should see bowls a little more regularly on the football side. All it takes is a 500 season, which in CUSA doesn't require you to be particularly good.

Does going 6-6 "guarantee" a bowl bid, or just make you "eligible" and you can be passed over?

Eh, its not guaranteed, but most years it would likely suffice.

ODU Sports Expectations
Are we really using enrollment numbers to set expectations?

I guess we need to schedule Duke and Villanova for easy wins.

Yep. I agree with this too.

you guys are right... (slight exaggeration incoming) but if we continue to be any where from mediocre to bad we'll be getting pounding by the two ACC schools on our schedule for the next 20 years in our OOC so that means we HAVE to go 4-4 (no guarantee there) in conference AND win our two other OOC games to make it to bowl eligibility. hopefully this season is far away from what should be the norm for our football program moving forward

RE: ODU Sports Expectations
I've only got expectations for the sports that I stay informed about. No offense to the rest, I just stick to what entertains me.

MBB: At least 24 wins, with a respectable performance OOC win or lose. Make it to CUSAT semis every year at least, ideally finals at least three years out of five. (Allowance for the occasional down year/freak upsets) For postseason - NIT, NCAAT, or nothing. No point in winning a tier-3 tournament that might not even be back the next year. I am also on board with NCAAT at least one year out of four.

FB: 7-5 most years with a low-level bowl game at least, since 6-6 is no guarantee. Compete to win the East most years, maybe win it two years out of five. Never finish a season with fewer than four wins. Market the program and recruit well. Schedule up and hope to play up. Take chances and make deals. It is the only way we're ever going anywhere.

Field Hockey: World-beaters. Still mad

25 is the new 20. For some reason lots of our fans still cling to that 20 number, even though it means you were barely above .500.

Well, you get the point. Win percentage relative to .500 is nothing different than its every been.

What a garbage post.

Compare those numbers to what we played in the 90's and earlier and it's dramatically different.

The chit tourneys have also inflated win totals significantly.

It's possible to have a 25+ win season of you win a chit tourney (which weve done twice) and still not even be a top 100 team.

The overall point, which you so thoroughly missed YET AGAIN, is that win totals are not the proper way to measure a team, NCAA and conference success is.

Jones hasn't made a tourney in nearly a decade and not at all at odu. Win totals be damned.

RE: ODU Sports Expectations
We are indeed the 7th largest college in Virginia. Smaller then TCC. Just a fact, not sure why anyone needs to spin it. And this stat takes in to account ODUs online students. And ODU has locations in several other cities too. I'm not talking D1, D2, or anything, just size. Geeze.

A good season for me is 23 wins in basketball and the football season being over.

The community colleges are systems with multiple locations per system. That is like including all of the University of North Carolina schools as one school.

RE: ODU Sports Expectations
THere are peaks and valleys so to put a hard and fast rule on each season is counter productive.

On average, I want to see 7-8 wins in football and top 3 in CUSA. Mix in some bowl wins periodically and NCAA tourneys in basketball every couple years.
