I believe SMU already broke ground on their facility. To open Spring 2019

Who here gives a crap what SMU does. Their athletics for the most part suck, just like Tulane, Tulsa and now ECU. They paid though the nose for June Jones for what, a coach that went 36-43 in 6 plus years. They paid Chad Morris 3 million plus to go 14-22, and now Dykes who fell flat on his face at Cal.

Side Show Joe must because he said SMU didn't have one and didn't have space to build one. I just corrected that statement. Nothing good or bad intended. Or would you rather have the incorrect statement stand?

Crushing June Jones 10 years ago on prime time ESPN is one of my best memories of Rice athletics as a student. Didn’t realize how spoiled I was with the ‘08 Rice team until later.

I still miss playing SMU, Tulane and Tulsa.

If I really sit down and think about it I always come to the conclusion that this arms race is really f'n stupid though. Shiny, pimped out lockers and IPFs (in TX atleast) are completely unnecessary. Not trying to hate, as I'm sure I'd be thrilled if UTSA got one but it just seems like a case of keeping up with the Jones rather than something thats truly needed. What UAB and USA got seems more practical.

I completely disagree about a IPF being "completely unnecessary" in Texas. We may not get the snow but we get plenty of ice, sleet, wind, and other miserable weather. Plus, being able get out of the summer heat is a huge plus.
The drawings look similar to the one Arkansas State built. I think it was $12 million but I could be off a little. It gets used by baseball, club softball, intramurals, camps, etc. and is great when football hosts big recruiting weekends.

Having great facilities won't necessarily get you recruits but not measuring up with peers will certainly cost you the chance to get them.

When I wrote that post back in October of last year, an indoor practice facility didn't appear to be on SMU's radar. They have obviously worked quickly to build one, and it appears SMU is doing a fine job of trying to open their's first.

This is nothing new. When North Texas built Apogee Stadium and were set to install a very nice big HD video board, SMU was quick to build a new big HD video board.

North Texas retired Jones for SMU. He resigned his coaching position the day after we stomped SMU 43-6 back in 2014. I'm hoping we can have a similar victory in Dykes first game.

I believe the signage will light up, but I'm not sure it will be the size in the renderings.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Teams practice outdoors in middle school and high school, as well as D2. It's not unreasonable for a recruit at the FBS level to expect something more. And if your school has that something more, which basically puts you on a somewhat more level playing field with the P5's, you're putting yourself in a great position to pull in some of those recruits you may not have gotten otherwise.

Understand also, a football stadium basically gets used 6 days in the year for football, and a small handful of other days for other possible events. An indoor practice facility gets used daily throughout the course of a football season, so I think it's a very good investment in that respect.

It isn't often that I agree with a Roadrunner, but you are spot on here. In addition to what you have stated, the indoor practice facility is important because more then a few DFW area high schools already have them. And, it is a facility SMU doesn't seem to be able to offer their recruits. I don't believe they have the room to build one.

Dallas doesn't even care about SMU, Hell people at SMU doesn't care about SMU athletics.

Since just 2008 when Jones took over SMU is 57-91. The Death Penalty excuse doesn't fly anymore and shouldn't have after 1998, that was 31 years ago, that was 7 almost 8 recruiting cycles ago now. SMU just sucks is all.

Just looked at SMU's athletic website. They don't have baseball team either. Damn, y'all are some no having baseball people in the DFW area. No wonder Dallas Baptist and UTA can have good baseball teams each year. I love North Texas and I'm glad you're in CUSA but the conference should make you field a baseball team before you're allowed to build these other facilities. You have a huge advantage over the other teams in the conference and imo it's not right.

I like UNT also, but I agree. The rest of us are at a competitive disadvantage as long as they're able to keep pouring money into football. They've got their eggs all in one basket. The rest of us can't do that. That $16 million should be going toward starting a baseball program.

No one is forcing your athletic departments to field baseball teams. If you drop them, you will have more money for building projects. And, we are not putting all of our eggs in one basket. Before we started constructing the practice facility, we built a new soccer/track stadium. We are also getting new courts at the Super Pit for our basketball programs this summer too. After the practice facility is finished we will set our sights on doubling the size of our athletic center. Sure, some of that project will benefit football (video boards at Apogee, new locker room, and new football weight room), but it will help the other sports too. If C-USA could force us to add baseball, I think they would have done it by now.

By the way... UTEP does not have baseball either (No one says anything about them). And, ODU and Rice don't sponsor softball (Maybe that gives Rice and ODU baseball an advantage) . Universities choose want sports they have, and if they don't meet the conference requirements, they would never have been invited.

Not my head. I didn't even know SMU was building an indoor practice facility until someone on the board pointed it out. I focus on North Texas.
