RE: Two things I noticed on Memphis-Houston replay
After gaining 9 on first. I cannot understand why we did not just keep hitting it up the middle. Any to we have had "one man to beat" this year, we never beat them. Why? We have no team speed.

Memphis (like Tulsa) played their LBs up near the line and often their CBS played tight on our WR. They just dared us to throw it over the middle...

We never did (do).

This offense only throw out routes and go routes, 50/50 balls, back shoulder throws. These are the lowest percentage passes. And to help the QB completion % we have half our passing game as the bubble screen and flip pass on the jet sweep.

2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, and 4th and 1 were all unimaginative crap calls.

A fake was a dumb idea and probably woulda lost yardage. Should have just lined up in regular offense and run for it, not like Memphis was stopping them.
Other than we did on second and an one then third and one. Do you understand the down and yardage rules?

Yeah.....That defense was soooo scary.....thats probably not even Applewhites dumbest decision---but it was the most obvious one. Anyone giving up 80 points in the last 2 second halves of football is probably making all sorts of dumb decisions.

I had that thought, too, but we did stuff them the two runs prior to that when they needed that same yard. If we did it again, Applewhite would have had more criticism than now, giving us a short field.

And that decision is not what beat them. It was giving up TDs on 6 straight drives in the second half, and turning the ball over 3 times.

I mean, clearly the defensive collapse was the main issue—but people always remember the last time they really had the game in thier control. That 4th down decision was it for Houston. Just like the missed Memphis field goal is what people remember in 2015 (though it was really giving up 4 or 5 second half TD’s). Same thing.

Maybe posting at 1:00AM isn't some folks' best time.

Let's just ignore the facts and pretend that Memphis had never stopped a one yard attempt......and we'll continue to think Applewhite is the hardheaded one.

Memphis was very fortunate to win a game with outstanding second half and particularly 4th quarter play that offset the outstanding Houston 1st half offense. Not sure why some Houston fans can't just accept it for what it is.

This isn't my style at all, but let's put this simply for those that can't accept reality:

1) Houston had 3 downs to gain one yard
2) They couldn't do it in 2 attempts
3) They were too scared to even attempt it again on 3rd down (against that horrible Memphis defense)

Is that clear enough?

Apologies for Houston fans that have accepted what happened on the field of play; I have tons of respect for the Cougar program and most fans.

Does anyone sense a growing demand to do anything about Applewhite?

I know the expectations are not the same as when Tom Herman was there, but it seems there are almost no expectations by the media.

Interesting take saying the DC is the problem.

Yeah, if you look at the entire body of work and not just the Memphis game, the O looks like more of a problem than the D.

And in both the Tulsa and Memphis games, the Houston D played great in the first half of each. So we are talking two halves of a season where they otherwise played more or less great.

The coaching decisions and Postma's late turnovers cost Houston a chance at the end.

Not to mention, the Memphis O can do that to almost any team, with short notice.

First, we only put up 17 points in the 1st half. Hardly "outstanding".

Second, we had a better shot at converting that 4th and 1 than we did of stopping your offense. Anyone who actually saw the game knows this.

Is that clear enough?

Hmm. Your a polite and good poster--so I find it odd that you would take offense to my post, especially since it was a fairly muted response to a well known Memphis troll.

I never said I didnt accept what happened on the field. The better team won. Frankly, I never expected to win that game and was pleased as punch we were in a position to win it. You wont find anywhere where I bragged about beating you guys prior to the game because I didnt think we would ( I rarely do that type of thing anyway).

What I DID say was that was the dumbest decision that OUR coach could have made. Our offense had had its way with the Memphis defense all night and 2 plays certainly didnt change that. Your defense was not scary. Sorry. By the way, it appears we did intend to go for it with a fake punt---but I'd have much preferred to just run the same offense that was working pretty well.

On the other hand, the Memphis offense looked unstoppable and had been the entire second half. I told my wife when we punted we just lost the game. Id have far preferred to roll the dice on likelihood that the Memphis defense could stop us for no gain 3 downs in row than give the ball back to a Memphis offensive unit we had no answers for.

Its offense and defense. However, the biggest issue with the offense has been predictability. The offense, up to the Memphis game had run the same half dozen or so plays over and over. It was bizarre. The Memphis game was the first time I have seen many of those plays. There was much more variety and the offense was much more productive because of it.

The defense has morphed from last years aggressive attacking blitz happy defense to a passive bend but dont break defense. Make the offense drive the entire field. Its too predictable and allows the offense to game plan knowing where everyone will be.

The offense seems to be improving. The defense...not so much. Its getting worse. Personally, the main thing I notice is there doesnt seem to be any improvement in individual players during the season. Thats definitely cause for concern.

Yeah, upon reading my response after it was cold, it was indeed pretty strong....more so than I thought. Sorry about that. I was in a mode of responding to pesik and westhoff in their argumentative. Rather than delete my comments, I'll leave them there as reminder to reread borderline responses 2 or 3 times prior to making them permanent. Thank you for the respectful advice. :)

FWIW, I don't want to give away anyone else's secrets, but shere khan means zero harm....it's all in humor.

No problem! Ive always known you to be very measured polite poster. Niice win for your team. At this point Im just rooting gor the AAC to have multiple Top 25 teams as many weeks as possible. As for us, we are down to just hoping to get bowl qualified (and of course winning said bowl should we get there).

Two things we have debated that are clear to me now:

1. On the 4th and 1 punt that has made the UH fans so mad, that was NOT intended to be a punt. It was set up to be a FAKE. 100%. Watch the play, and slow it down, if you can, but you can see it, either way.

One of the up blockers in front of the punter, when the ball was snapped, reached up and tried to grab it. In fact, I think it tipped his fingers. Looked to me that the long snapper either snapped it too high or too hard, or both.

But the up block absolutely tried to reach up and catch the ball. No way in hell a regular blocker would even make a move like that.

But the ball went back to the punter, and he had no choice but to punt it. But Applewhite was definitely going for the fake there. The snapper just messed it up.

2. Somebody here posted that the bottle throwing happened after the game. Nope. The bottles came on the field after Postma's fumble was confirmed by the replay refs. There were 59 seconds left on the clock.

Applewhite addressed this at the press conference today. The team basically has a fake punt call on every time if they see a certain look. The fake punt is supposed to be automatically called off if a certain defensive key is not present. That look was not present Thursday night---so it was supposed to be called off but there appears to have been some sort of miscommunication. Said he was going to look into how they do it so that it doesnt happen again.

lol....So I guess we are back to Applewhite wasnt going to go for the first down after all.

Ah, thanks. That makes perfect sense. So, is every single player on the team supposed to recognize the look on his own? That seems dangerous.

The fake punt is supposed to be automatically called off if a certain defensive look is not present. That look was not present--- so it was supposed to be called off but there appears to have been some sort of miscommunication. Said he was going to look into how they do it so that it doesnt happen again. I almost mentioned this possibility last night just because it happened in the Pittsburg game I was watching yesterday.

Ah, thanks. That makes perfect sense. So, is every single player on the team supposed to recognize the look on his own? That seems dangerous.

I dont know. He said there was a "miscommunication", so Im assuming the punter (or someone else) looks for the key and makes the call--but he didnt specifically say that.

Yeah, that makes more sense. But that one guy certainly didn't see or hear the signal. Man, that would have been one big mess if he had knocked down that snap.
