RE: Sellout streak
The sellout streak is becoming an embarrassment more than something to be proud of. Its a joke and every fan in attendance knows it. ODU needs to let it die and move on.

I've never seen a handful of posters so resentful of something so trivial. Do you believe recruits show up and say "Well, there are a few empty seats and they called this a sellout! I'm going elsewhere!"

Total non issue.

You are completely missing the point. It has nothing to do with recruits, and everything to do with the fact that 75% of the people in our market don't think there are any tickets available.

I see the facebook ad promoting ticket sales for the rest of the season every time I log in. I also get emails with the same ad. And when you go to odusports.com, you're greeted with the same ad. Then there are the weekly articles from Harry talking about how we have x amount of tickets to sell to keep the streak alive.

So, just how dumb are these 75% you refer to that believe there arent tickets available? If they had any interest at all in ODU football, they would know they could buy them.

If I am a casual fan, I'm really not in the market in September for a ticket for a single game taking place in November. I am a casual fan and I don't know if I will be in town, what my wife might want to do, what time my kids' soccer games will be that far in advance, or if something better will come up, such as a buddy inviting me to go fishing.

I have seen Facebook posts or Ed Miller/Harry Minium Tweets informing tickets are available... on game day when most people already have something planned for the day. I have never seen anything on Tuesday indicating tickets are available for Saturday.

2 months in advance is too early. Game day is too late.

They've been running facebook Ads promoting a ticket deal for the rest of the season (including last weekends game) since the UNC game. You could save by buying tickets to multiple games (it was a pick 2 deal) or you could just buy single game tickets. I saw it repeatedly over the last 2 weeks. So, they're doing exactly what you are asking of them.

Folks that dont know, just don't care to.

Edit, here is one of the ads I was emailed.

Here is the one I mentioned seeing on Facebook.

People in this day and age don't have facebook, read billboards, read the pilot, or listen to the radio?

Sellout streak
Let's make this clear for anyone who might not know. There are always tickets available to our football games. Sure they will cost you a bit more when we play VT or UNC, but there are always tickets available.

They are casual fans who don't follow ODU on Facebook and certainly don't receive emails from ODU.

If they don't follow ODU on facebook, have never purchased tickets from ODU (otherwise they would get emails), don't read the paper, don't follow ODU on the radio and haven't bothered to look on ynottix for tickets, what makes you think they'd ever buy a ticket?

They've literally shown no interest and made no attempt at following ODU or buying ODU tickets.

And yet I encounter people who want to go to games and think they are sold out several times per season... and these are just the people I interact with.

To be honest, this is the only place that I hear about tickets being available. I guess you could count The Pilot, but honestly I see the links here which is what prompts me to go read the articles. I don't use Facebook, I don't listen to sports radio, and I have never received an email about tickets from ODU that I can recall, and I have ordered tickets online in the past. I don't get emails that season ticket holders or ODAF members get because they are in my father's name.

It may be hard for us die hards to understand, but the vast majority of the public is not that plugged in. That is its own problem that ODU needs to work on, but that does not mean that there are not thousands of people among the 1.7M in Hampton Roads who would enjoy checking out a game, and who may love the experience and turn into future revenue sources.

Every time they read about odu it's "sellout, sellout, sellout".

Why WOULD they bother at this point?

The casual fan has no idea how hollow this accomplishment actually is and how easy it would be to acquire tickets, much less a non-fan who just may want something to do on a Saturday.

Games won, even non-consecutively, over any period of time are a better indication of program direction than the toothless (and ultimately meaningless) "sellout streak". The ploy has grown old, and we've gone from "upstart with a gimmick" to "stagnant with no excuse" over the course of ten years.

It's harder for me to understand as a consumer. If I want something, I find out where and how to get it. These folks are supposedly plugged in enough to know the sellout streak is in tact. However, they haven't seen a single ad, read an article, or wandered over to ynottix to just check how much tickets are or if any are available. It's contradictory, daft and/or just plain lazy.

RE: Sellout streak
This is, in my humble opinion, a nonsense argument. On the one hand, the sellout streak is transparently hollow -- being kept alive by the generous folks at Atlantic Bay Mortgage buying up unused tickets to donate to local boy scout and cub scout troops. On the other hand, there is no way I am accepting the argument that there are fans who would otherwise be interested in someday attending an ODU football game, but are instantly deciding against it because they think the game is sold out. Anyone that daft is not going to be able to figure out how to get to Foreman Field in the first place.

The bigger concern is why ODU cannot break into the public limelight here in its own home community. Pilot columnist Kerry Dougherty has just written an article on her family's huge love for college football, with shout outs to UVA, Clemson, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Not a single mention of ODU:

https://pilotonline.com/news/local/colum...cc50b.html

That is not due to Ms. Dougherty's belief that she cannot get a ticket to one of our home games. That is simply a lack of interest.

When is the lst time you have heard this outside of at the game? You are arguably people that are plugged in enough to hear about the sellout (gets mentioned at game and offen Bobbys presser or wakeup with wilder) yet they aren t plugged in enough to hear the ads for tickets.

If people are intereted in going, even if they are blockheaded and think it is sold-out, wouldnt they go to stubhub or other secondary market to attempt to get tickets? All ODU and see about avilability? Or just whine about tickets not being available for something when tickets actually are? You are talking about making literlly no effort in going to a game.
