Couldn't agree more. Why is ODU stuck in the 80s? Wood Selig, you are on the radar. Hire marketing people that know what they are doing. OPEN UP YOUR WALLET!

Wood hired the guy that got the program jump started, Willie Taggart.

Dude, give it up. WKY went from a IAA team to FBS football. He left when the team was in the first or 2nd year of FBS football and hired Taggert, who is now the coach of Oregon.

The mens and womens basketball teams won 7 conference championships. The volleyball team became a top 25 team. The baseball team went to regionals.

"Selig was AD while the Tops won 66 Sun Belt Conference championships. He also spearheaded more than $100 million in renovations to athletic facilities, including a $50 million upgrade to Houchens-Smith Stadium and a $33 million one to E.A. Diddle Arena."

I didnt say he wasn't a good fundraiser. He's done pretty well by that standard here too. He's also a known baseball fan and has improved that as well. Our athletics marketing leaves a ton to be desired. The jury is still out on how he will handle getting a top quality stadium built, and the direction of the football team and the basketball teams. JJ seems like he might be stepping up recruiting so I'd be inclined to maybe give him another year after this one to see if the team continues on the upward trajectory. If so, maybe Wood got a good one. He hired what appears to be a great womens bb coach too. But football... we just don't know which way the program is going, yet. What we do know is WKU football sucked while he was there. Maybe Wood's just not a football guy. Or maybe he is. We will find out over the next few years.

They were in the first two years of FBS football and he hired the guy that took them to another level. This thought that him leaving helped the football team is just manufactured criticism.

FWIW, I do not think Selig is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I like him and he's always friendly, but he is far from perfect.

If the 4th best recruiting class in CUSA is all it takes to get JJ another year, we may as well just give him a lifetime contract.

Probably should be different thread, but I'm not sure why everyone is that much more excited about the 18 recruiting class?

Last years class had Hueit, Godwin, Kithcart, McClinton, and Pilavios. Granted, I don't know much about Pilavios, but Hueit is probably a better recruit than Wade. I put Wade in a tier around Godwin. Kithcart is a very nice pickup.

Is it just because this years recruits are tall?

I must have missed the upward trajectory.

We have gone nowhere but down since Trey Freeman left. Also, while I am relatively content with the 2018 recruiting so far, they still need to be admitted to the school, pass their gauntlets of tests to make sure they have never so much as been in the same room as marijuana, avoid getting into any fights, buy into JJ's leadership 100%, and prove that they can play defense well enough to see the court. And other than admission, this applies to Green and the 2017 recruits as well.

Given the post-Blaine history, any optimism I cam muster is met with extreme caution. With a flash in the pan, JJ has the potential to pull off a great season, but all the pieices will have to fall into place perfectly. If there is any dissent among the ranks or anyone plays in a manner that doesn't fit JJ's mold, regardless of any other way he could potentially use the talent, the wheels can fall off just as quickly.

RE: Sellout streak
I think it is because they are tall and they are early. Usually panic sets in before we actually get any commits. I was initially very excited about this class, but as I look closer, it looks like a solid class, but not a game changer.

Also, we do this every year once some players sign. That is why I am just going to refrain from recruiting discussions for the most part. I, like pretty much everyone else, have no idea how these classes will pan out. They are not good enough to say with certainty that they will be great classes and they definitely are not bad enough to say with certainty that we are in trouble. I will just wait and see what JJ produces on the court... and with that, I will stop doing what I said I am not going to do in a thread that is supposed to be about football.

Probably because McClinton isn't playing and similar highly touted recruts in the past include Lidonde (Hueit/Godwin), Donte Hill (Kithcart), and Stuart McEwan (Pilavos). Hopefully this class lives up to the hype, but it is very difficult to get too excited when a let down has become the expectation.

Right now the only ones I am really excited about are Caver and Porter, while the Stiths could be nice role players. Hopefully there is a pleasant surprise or two and JJ catches a flash in the pan, but I'm not expecting that to happen.

I think it is too early to give up on BJ. He has two more years, and did show some progress last year. He has a body and athleticism to be very good, just seems he didn't have a good understanding of offense and some fundamentals for a lot of last year.

I was really down on BJ in the first half of the season, but a light bulb went off about halfway through the season. I think in conference he only scored single digits in 4 games.

I think he will be a very good player for us. He averaged 30 points per 100 possessions in conference at a .485 TS%. Doesn't turn ball over, rebounds decent. HOpefully his 3 point shot improves this season.

The elder Stith has been our best frontcourt player the last two years, but in your mind he could be a role player? smh

You should never consider the 'hype' on a player out of HS who transfers in. The hype will have been proven right or wrong before he steps foot on campus here. We inherit the player as is not his hype from years before.

Stuart McEwan (a transfer) was not a highly touted player. He was tall. That was it. He was tall. He couldn't shoot the ball. He couldn't handle the ball. But he was tall. Not sure how you can say he was highly touted. He came in mid season out of nowhere (for a frickin reason) and disappeared almost as fast. He committed and signed here before the coaches had really evaluated him. They took him because he was...............wait for it......................TALL. They were totally shocked at how bad he was. Or are you confusing him with the guy Capel brought in? That was only 17 years ago. He too was NOT highly touted. He was brought in to be a Cal Bowdler clone. They hoped they could catch lightening in a bottle twice with similar type prospects. But there was a huge difference. Cal was broad and long. Broad shoulders, long wing span. This kid (whose name I forget but is similar to Stuart McEwan) was not touted. He was also.......wait for it.......TALL. But he had no shoulders and while being 7'0 tall he had maybe a 6-8 wingspan. no shoulders and relatively short arms. he was the Tyrannosaurus Rex of college centers. But again he was signed 17 years ago. Almost before any of the 2018 commits were born.

Lindonde!?! Wow comparing two 2/3 star recruits to someone who signed what 10 years ago? Really? there was a reason he came to ODU. he may have been a 3 start recruit. But I think we were his best offer. Others backed off of him. He was one dimensional coming in and barely broadened out from that one dimension. Remember even Blaine said he couldn't cover a tombstone. However, no one ever said Abdi may be the best shooter in the country. At least one analyst said that about Hueit. Also, if Hueit guards just one player well for 5 minutes he'll have shown more than Abdi ever did. I loved Jr. Hate talking bad about him. But he was not that good.

Hill (was a transfer) got screwed by the NCAA. We do not know what he would have done his SR year. Hill was not a PG. Kithcart is. Why compare different positions?

Again, like I said above, transfers have already dispensed with any hype long before they get here. You should not ride those coattails to show your antipathy towards our current recruits.

Have you seen Huett or Wade yourself? If not, maybe you should read what scouting services say about them before stating one is better than the other. Personally, I'm excited about a 6-5 PG. Especially if he'll be pared with a 'reported' sharpshooter like Hueit. Can't wait to see them together. Who was the last 3* PG ODU signed?

Super confused when I opened a FB attendance thread and the convo was on BB recruiting. Then I realized I was in the Lion's Den and it made perfect sense. Carry on.

Probably because McClinton isn't playing and similar highly touted recruts in the past include Lidonde (Hueit/Godwin), Donte Hill (Kithcart), and Stuart McEwan (Pilavos). Hopefully this class lives up to the hype, but it is very difficult to get too excited when a let down has become the expectation.

Right now the only ones I am really excited about are Caver and Porter, while the Stiths could be nice role players. Hopefully there is a pleasant surprise or two and JJ catches a flash in the pan, but I'm not expecting that to happen.

We have had a lot of sharpshooters come through here. Lidonde was one of the better ones. John Morris might have been the best.

Are predicting a conference championship this year or are you excited to potentially finish in the top 5 again?

RE: Sellout streak
Sellout Streak is still going and so is this nonsense. Taking about players who were recruited by a coach 20 years ago.

Nope, I get excited about conference championships. Some people get excited about finishing in the top 5 of the conference. I have a hunch we are all in agreement here, but have different levels of excitement threshold.

Again, are you (understood you) predicting a conference championship this year or are you excited to potentially finish in the top 5 again?

I think Hueit is a solid recruit, but whether he passes his drug tests, avoids fighting with the women's team, plays good enough defense to stay out of JJ's doghouse, and adjusts to the speed of the D1 college game and JJ's offensive schemes so that his high school sharpshooting translates here remains to be seen. I hope he stays out of trouble and averages 7 3pt baskets per game and becomes the next Steph Curry, but understand it is pretty difficult to get hopes up too high given that our progam can't seem to catch a break. I also think it is unrealistic to expect he will lead us to a conference championship as a true freshman. If we get to a conference championship, we will need to catch a flash in the pan in the tournament or Caver will have to become an All-American.
