Yeah, Ken. That logo we had was the coolest in college athletics! Makes me sad that a carpetbagger like Prez Shelton got to determine our fate while he was just passing through.

That was a very cool helmet logo.

Coincidence the program began to slide when Huron nickname-logo was ditched?

I think not.

For those into this arcane debate, EMU football declined after the California Bowl BUT EMU men's basketball started a golden run (1991-8) in which MBB made the Sweet 16, beat Duke, beat Michigan, beat Syracuse and were nationally ranked.

Most EMU MBB fans probably feel the loss of Ben Braun and Gary Waters, not the logo, was the reason the MBB's fortune headed south.

For those into happenstance, etc. 1991 was a great year for EMU Hurons MBB and 1996-8 were great years for EMU Eagles MBB. Go figure!!

You don't get to decide what is an arcane debate or not. The fact is, in one fell swoop, EMU went from having the best/most unique logo to the worst/least original logo. That fact cannot be debated, sir. That lack of alumni donations since the old switcheroo has greatly hurt this university.

Arcane, may or may not, be the right word but it happened 25 years ago. (I just looked up the definition and I don't think arcane is the right word. I should have found a word to denote something which happened long ago which is best understood in historical context).

Twenty five years ago I qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon.

Now I have an arthritic knee which probably should be replaced.

And if one doesn't want to use a personal example, in 1991 didn't the U.S. win a smashing victory in Iraq and look what has happened in the intervening 25 years...

Sometimes history is history and what happens frequently can't be undone.

I'm simply saying what happened with the EMU logo, etc. 25 years ago happened. Something like that can't be undone. Basically, it is best understood through the lens of history.

My point was EMU FB was heading south when the logo change happened and EMU MBB was headed north. I can not see any correlation or cause and effect in changing the logo or name on the success of either FB or MBB. It didn't seem to matter too much to a 17 year old high school FB or MBB player considering EMU.

Dear steve,
By heading south, do you mean immediately? Eastern had winning seasons in football '86 through '89, and we were one play from being repeat MAC champions in 1988.
One thing is for certain, in the logo/nickname debate. Eastern lost thousands in donations in the early nineties, and some of that may even be continuing today.

Memory is foggy but I thought that by '91 EMU FB was headed south. And didn't we have a coaching change in 1992 (?).

I agree about the lost donations but original posters might have been speaking of Ws and Ls, not donations.

Dear steve,
You are correct about 1991, but that's why I asked about immediately, because Eastern had two winning seasons after the California Bowl.

1990 was the beginning of the slide which cost Harkema his job (1992).

My point is kind of academic or geeky, but I see NO CORRELATION between the name change and athletic performance.

FB started going down hill in 1990 and didn't turn up until Ron Cooper started bringing talent to EMU. The team looked to be headed north in '94 and '95 before things unraveled under Rasnick.

in MBB it is very easy to describe:

1991 was a senior laden team with Marcus Kennedy and the Thomas twins. And then Braun quickly rebuilt the team with some very, very nice player acquisitions which ushered in the greatest era of EMU MBB. And then it went downhill after both Gary Waters and Ben Braun left for greener pastures (HC jobs).

Anybody notice that Miami of Ohio got BETTER at football after it ditched their Indian mascot in 1996?

One thing I know is, there are alums who have never opened their checkbooks to the university since they were frozen out of the nickname change process. The university suffered financially from Sheldon's and the board's actions.
