Is this the football version of baseball's yips? Or is it something more?

Seems like more. After Hagan missed the last second field goal against BC that seemed to start his consistently missing.

No matter how Hagan is kicking in practice he seems to lack confidence in games. If it was the snap, hold or blocking I would think Carey would say that; he has not and puts it solely on Hagan. I see 2 choices; give him one last try against BG to see if he can kick his way out of his funk before the stretch run or bench him and have Ference (so long as it does not affect his punting) or whoever kicking field goals; as noted, what do we have to lose? I will be the first to admit I don't understand kickers, and it seems so much of it is mental. At this point I expect Hagan to miss; if Carey feels that way then his choice is clear.

It's a shame, especially for a guy who made some great kicks. Recall him kicking game winners as a FR.

RE: Our Kicker
Didn't they say they were trying to fix something with his kicking in the offseason? Probably just messed him up. He wasn't great last season or before, but he was better than this.

Here is the preview of special teams where the coach said they changed some little things technique-wise and Hagan sounds very confident coming into the season.

http://www.niuhuskies.com/news/2017/8/25...teams.aspx

Whatever they did sure seems to have back-fired! He made some good kicks in his career, but he was not a great kicker. Now he is terrible; Carey's statement that Hagan had an "awful day" against Buffalo applies to his whole season.

How so? The only game where weather was a factor was Kent St which happened to be the only game he was 100%

http://www.cfbstats.com/2017/player/503/...melog.html

Weather was perfect vs BC, EIU, Nebraska, SDSU and Buffalo...

Putting him in a game deciding situation vs BC when you should have gone for the win. And 4th and 1 and not going for it , and let struggling kicker attempt 45 yard FG. Just some tone deafness

Kicker needs to make the kick under any circumstances.

Its a possibility Hagan is a little fragile with confidence, I think that whole theme of "playing in fear" applies to him also. He knows if he misses he will get a military style dress down. Its just so hard to perform when you fear the mistake to that degree. Fear and pressure are the two biggest destructors of athletic performance in my opinion.

+1. Regardless of the circumstance, since mid last season he’s been kicking at a below average level. When you’re at the opponents 35 yard line and the coach rather punt than go for the field goal, it’s obvious they’ve lost faith in him.

Give Orne a shot.

Demote Hagan and make him the holder. He hasn't earned his starting position these last two years. They were quick to demote Santa.

I am not sure I even see Santa as a demotion, Carey used this year to evaluate what he had at QB, the regular season was our summer camp.

You gotta feel for a 21 year old in such a public 'slump'. We WILL NEED some big FGs, those Toledo and directional Michigan school games will require it I'm sure.

Hagan is physically fine, but we need a psychic healing thing...Everyone on the board: inhale, exhale, close your eyes, and wish good things for Hagan..... then light a candle for the young man...and some one please come up with some good voodoo or bead thing for us all to practice....

Or just a coach to put him in manageable situations until he gets that confidence back. And maybe don't chew him out boot camp style

Cmon......this is a 21-22 year old adult not a 10 year old kid. He’s lucky that Carey even stuck with him this long. We get it u don’t like Carey but what coach wouldn’t be pissed off. He’s missed soooo many big kicks this year. Carey put faith in him during the BC game and he cost them the game. I know as a fan I wanted to yelll at him when he missed that last field goal.

Hagen better not read this board, it won't help him mentally. I hope he starts doing better like all of you do, but a lot goes into kicking, mostly mental. He has a great leg, but if it's not in sync with the brain and confidence is not there, he is doomed. A lot like golf, exactly like golf.

Numbers don't lie. That is brutal but can he make the next one?

I imagine as he's always been practicing as a K. You're only an injury away from "next man up".

It'd be great if we blow-out BG and he'd get a feel for a game day experience with an XP and a FG.
