RE: Another reason to dislike EMU
EMU needs to drop football and fast. They have a football team and most people at that school do not even know it because they are too busy sticking their mitts in the affairs of other schools. This loser from a class D accounting department just wants to take others along for the ride. And, why is someone from EMU's accounting department speaking at NIU? That's like someone from Kishwaukee College speaking at Harvard.

I mean, he’s not wrong, we spend a ton on athletics and we don’t get much in return. Will NIU drop to FCS? No way. But why would I get upset?

Does that factor in the exposure the football program brings in for the unveristy though? I doubt it.

Quote:His solution? Get out of Division I competition, where contracts for coaches such as Michigan University’s Jim Harbaugh and Alabama’s Nick Saban set a startling market.

“We don’t have to play in the same sandbox as Ohio State and Michigan University,” he said.

I understand it's super sexy in the high academy to criticize the knuckle dragging mouth breathers in sports, but what's the ROI on the Music Department? The Physics Department? The too numerous to count Administrative functions? Where is the line drawn that this dollar is wasted, but that dollar is appropriate?

Education has a non-profit mission of which Intercollegiate Athletics is an important member. If you could sell me that NIU could be the next University of Chicago by going DIII, I am all freaking ears Professor Huron.

Doesn't fit his narrative. Being at EMU, he can't conceive of a football program bringing value to a university,

Probably some other professors agree with him at EMU and other schools. But nobody else.

Not really sure what NIU's "exposure" is doing for it, has done. Blame the budget and every other thing other the sun but attendance is still pathetic and the big plans for athletics by STF have never taken off. Not to mention enrollment down in the 1000's.

Illinois' finances and lack of a budget haven't helped, never mind the fact that Illinois has a decreasing population.

Television and no weekend games are two reasons for attendance problems.

I would venture that an intangible such as football exposure is good for a university, but what do I know? I'm not an EMU professor selling his agenda to a bunch of athletics-hating academics wanting a raise.

It would be one more indicator of NIU declining as a school.

RE: Another reason to dislike EMU
Aside from the price tag on an athletic director, football coaching staff, and men's basketball coaching staff, how are the expenses of NIU's athletic program any greater than say a D3 program? You may argue scholarships, but at a D3 school they just rename them "participation grants", and they add up to a lot of $, particularly at an expensive private school. Just looking for some examples of additional expenses a school like NIU would have, and remember we do have some income coming in to offset our costs that D3 programs do not enjoy.

Take sports away and I wouldn't donate a dime to the academic side.

Convo center was a poor decision.
FB has been very important to NIU.
Basket Ball far less so.
It is disappointing that NIU's student enrollment has not increased to a larger size.

Academics does precede sport.
They do need to pay the administration less and maybe find ways to allocate more towards
The academic staff.

Same here. If the FBS program was in Carbondale instead of DeKalb, I'd be a Saluki.

Tenured positions? What are they making $80,000-90,000? Not too many Coaches are tenured.
