Did Rick Pitino text with Adidas executive Jim Gatto AFTER the FBI’s report into corruption in college basketball dropped?

It certainly appears so:

Wait… Sept. 28? This broke on the 26th.

— Joe Sonka (@joesonka) October 17, 2017

The wording of the texts also makes it seem as if something is missing.
I did some research. Thursday, September 28th was last month. The only Thursday, September 28th before that was in 2006.
Wait a minute. Pitino and Gatto were texting AFTER the federal complaint??
— Jason Riley (@JasonRileyWDRB) October 17, 2017

Not to mention there are obviously deleted texts.
— John Lewis WDRB (@JohnWDRB) October 17, 2017

Written 2 days after story broke…Very interesting…and who says "ok" when no comment was before (clearly at least one was deleted)
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) October 17, 2017

Someone has some explaining to do…

What a freaking scam that big time college sports has become. Even the conservative in me says to force those schools to start giving large % of athletic revenue back to the school over certain amounts. There is no reason for an amateur sports to need $80+ million to fund non-professional sports. I think these coaches might survive if they make under $5 million per year.

RE: Did Rick Pitino Text With Adidas Executive Jim Gatto After the FBI
New wiretap just uncovered.

Gatto: Coach, we've got a nice setup for you. We can load you up with blue chip players and make you a rich man.
Pitino: I am a rich man.
Gatto: We can make you richer.
Pitino: ...because we're all set up with blow, alcohol, and hookers.
Gatto: Forget that ****. We'll do it all through your assistants and you'll never get caught.
Pitino: And you want me to have these guys killed?
Gatto: Look, just keep your mouth shut, look the other way, and we'll give you $38 million.
Pitino: Then I kill them?
Gatto: For God's sake Rick, just shut up, do what you're told, and you get all the money.
Pitino: What about the kids?
Gatto: We'll give them $10 or 15 thousand.
Pitino: Of my money? That doesn't seem fair.

It's almost like an industry that creates billions in revenue and doesnt have to fairly compensate its labor might be predisposed to being morally and ethically bankrupt.

Most of the universities are government agencies; it is perfectly legitimate to set rules for their operation and not leave it up to the free market. It very well could be decided that coaches salaries and investments in athletics must be tied to pay and investments on the academic side. No reason a FB coach should be making $4m/yr while professors are making $75k and adjuncts are languishing away on $1500/class. Cap the coaches pay at universities taking Federal aid, cap reinvestment of revenue, and require that the remainder be provided back to the academic side to support the actual university mission.

Could you stop coaches from making their own deals with shoe companies? With millions of dollars being thrown around, there's always opportunity for corruption.
Sonny Vacarro, the original shoe deal guy for Nike, Adidas and Reebok commented about it:
What the world's most famous ex-sneaker executive thinks caused, will come of latest hoops scandal
“They’re going to stretch the envelope and break rules again and again and again,” he said. “They haven’t stopped for 100 years. They’ve been cheating, they’ve been fixing games, they’ve been doing everything for 100 years. The other thing that remains constant is the NCAA pays itself a lot of money and nothing changes.”
“I signed college coaches,” he said. “The whole shoe deal – it’s the whole school that they own. Now you’re a partner because now the president of the school signs off, the athletic director, the coach signs off. I just signed the contract with the coach, the school didn’t get involved. So now everybody knows everybody.”
“So when I wake up yesterday morning I look and see the perfect storm. All the future suspects in one bin. Everyone’s involved,” Vaccaro said. “I don’t think a lot of these things are any different (than previous scandals) if you put them singular.
"I think the main thing is everyone went to the same birthday party these last two years."

The big companies aren't going to dump millions on a coach or a school without some expectation that the players will be their guys.

Yes, lots of jobs restrict outside earnings. As to the shoe companies making deals, they will still want to market the team. They'll just have to market the actual college team and not individual guys that are still in HS.

Why is the Louisville BOT pondering keeping Tom Jurich as AD. What AD working for a school would allow a coach to keep 95% of shoe company revenue while the school get 5%. Jurich should be fired just because he allowed Pitino to keep the money and run the program and cheated the school out of money.

Jurich's daughter made the deal.
