The Pegulas gave PSU $88 million for its arena. I'm sure they also gave a significant amount to get the program going, though I'm not exactly sure how much.

They don't have the expense of a football program, and I know they are moving in to advance the profile of the university.

Although Charm probably believes he is the smartest guy in his cell block, he has absolutely no insight here whatsoever.

I may not have any more insight than you, but unlike you, I have not only have my head thoroughly removed from my rear, I actually know what I'm talking about.

So the Red Wings, Pistons and Oakland hockey would all share LCA? I don't even see how that would be logistically possible.

Really? That's awesome? When did you have your head removed from your A$$? Maybe you can start having civil dialog with people, and we might finally hear you say something intelligent.

As far as you "knowing what you are talking about", that would be a first.

Well there is a second areana in the building that the wings use for practice and the Illiches have made available for local youth teams as well as high school teams .Granted the second area doesnt have 20,000 seating capacity but it might be a resource until the school could secure their own, Now I’m not saying it will happen but once the studies are completed and the University makes a decision to pursue Hockey anything is possible.

Not sure where this second arena is, but Oakland University is 31 miles north of Detroit where Joe Louis Arena resides (I know, the Red Wings are in a new Arena now, but it can't be far from JLA). Too far to be a convenient arena.

Nets, Devils, Concerts, HS Hockey, College Hockey shared building for years
Madison Square Garden can host BB, Hockey, Concerts and a dog show over the same week.
The Lakers, Kings, Clippers, Concerts at LA Coliseum. They even had WHA team a couple years crashing the party.

Even Kalamazoo Wings stadium can host the Globetrotters, K Wings, HS Hockey, KOHA Hockey and a concert in same week if they have too. I've seen it done

RE: Oakland U Considering Hockey Program
I doubt OU would play it's games at LCA. I grew up near Oakland, and played youth hockey. I'm not sure what local arenas serve the area now but my guess is that there is something which would suffice for a year or two. If not, what are they doing with the palace? That is just down the road.

I'm sure this is one of the things the feasibility study is assessing. If it works I think OU having a D1 hockey program would be great.

The Palace is going to be dozed - the land it's on is highly-valued commercial real estate. It's a shame - it's still a first class arena, even at 30 year's old.

I Attended several Detroit Vipers games at the Palace when there was an IHL. They became a good draw when the NHL went on strike .Gordie Howe came back to play one game with the Vipers at age 69.They sold out the Palace 20,000 plus attended that game.

I agree. It's always been a very nice venue, and comfortable for fans.

That is certainly a much more realistic situation as opposed to playing in the full arena.

Wings Stadium is a multi-rink facility with arenas of various sizes. It's also on much cheaper property with ostensibly a much cheaper mortgage than say the Oven.

Oakland could certainly play out of an annex rink at LCA but it would never be feasible for them to play out of the big arena. College hockey plays on weekend nights and the Grizzlies would NEVER get those juicy prime time nights from the Wings and Pistons.

Any league Oakland joins would have to accept OU playing mid week games and Sunday/Monday games. I can't see too many teams or leagues wanting to do that unless the potential pay day for them is huge, and I doubt that will be happening.

Again, I'm very skeptical of the NHL and its approach with this. I think these studies are a lot of smoke and mirrors. I will believe Oakland playing D-1 hockey when I see it.

Yes. Bill Davidson certainly kept it up. The power of private investment in such facilities.....

That was about the only thing the Palace was good for. Everything else about it sucked: Location, lack of surrounding amenities, non-central location....
