You must be really old. More than a decade ago, I went with my fraternity brothers for a drive to Key West, FLA on fall break.
I'm so old we got a week off in the fall to go pick cotton.
They still picked cotton in 1991?
I was born in 1951. My mom was from east Arkansas, and up through the mid-sixties or so, my cousins in that area got a week or so off during cotton harvest time. I remember as a kid in the late 50s when a lot of it was hand-picked and did a short stint on an uncle's farm picking it when I was little. I didn't have to do it for necessity, just sort of did it for fun. If memory serve me, most cotton picking in 1960 was done by braceros. My uncle and many others thought machine picking was really sloppy and wasted a lot.
That is very interesting. Thanks for sharing your story. Huge cotton fields around me have been harvested by machines and they were done in a couple of days.
The reason tamales are a big food item in the delta is because of all the Mexicans who came up to pick cotton during the bracero program. My Forrest City aunt used to spend all morning making tamales and other stuff to bring to the cotton picking hands out in the field for their noontime dinner.
Those are days long gone. I'm glad I got to experience the tail end of that era.

Houston is pissed off, and at home.
Memphis is coming off an emotional win. On the road. With a short week.
A win Thursday would be the most impressive of the season-so far.
Agreed. Tigers will need to be focused at Houston. I hope the players don't have anything important to do in school.
Not to worry
