College basketball 2017-18 previews
Picked up Athlon's preview yesterday (haven't seen any of the other previews yet). Athlon picks the Rockets to finish third in the MAC West. Western Michigan picked to win the West and get the automatic bid; Buffalo picked to win the East. Jaelan Sanford picked second team all conference.
Odds and ends about some Toledo opponents -
Syracuse picked to finish 11th in the ACC and get a bid to the NIT
Kansas picked to win the Big 12 and get to the Final Four
Oakland picked to win the Horizon regular season and tournament
Penn picked to finish 4th, Cornell 7th in the Ivy League

Lindy's picks UT to finish 4th in the MAC West. Just like Athlon, Lindy's picked Western to win the West and Buffalo to win the East and named Jaelan second-team all-MAC.
Lindy's also said last year's UT squad was last in the conference and ranked #332 in Ken Pomeroy's Luck factor (that's out of 351 schools; at least I think that's the number). Lindy's also says "one of these years, Toledo's luck will change and it will start winning more close ones."
You can find Pomeroy's luck rating (along with other numbers for all the teams) here.

I think 3rd or 4th in the West is a fair early prediction on paper. Western should be the class of the West and I think we'll be in a mix with Ball State & EMU for the 2-3-4 spots.

Street & Smith also picks UT for third in the MAC West. Says Jaelan Sanford may be the most underrated player in the MAC.
Also picked what it calls an All-Sharpshooter team. Nate Navigato made that team.

I think the MAC site, in general, is tough to navigate but this is pretty ridiculous.

It used to be that coaches tried to downplay their teams' prospects in order to manage expectations. Not any more - at least not for TK. He says that this is the most skilled team that he's had and that this team is deeper than past teams. Asked about the recruiting class of Sanford, Navigato, Knapke, and Adway, he says that the staff had high expectations of all four, and all four have exceeded those expectations. Based on that statement, which makes no sense, I don't think we can put much weight on TK's comments.

If Adway has exceeded expectations he should never have been recruited.

Indeed.
I do wonder if TK is starting to feel some pressure. “Fake it till you make it”?

RE: College basketball 2017-18 previews
coach k is a positive coach. he tends to go that route publicly. I'm sure behind the scenes the players are hearing what they need to be better. Remember, unless you are Duke or Kentucky you don't expect most of your recruits to be stars as underclassmen. You might sign a guy or two that plays a lot right away but you recruit with the potential of that guy in a few years in mind. Sanford and Navigato are ahead of the production curve in their career. Knapke hasn't totally made his mark but he has been improving steadily. Adway struggled to adjust but seemed to make some leaps as last season went on. He really should have redshirted his first year and we'd be talking about him differently this season as a RS Soph. He will certainly get his chance this time to prove he can be productive. I also think part of coach k's statement reflects on the kids being solid teammates, students and citizens. If you take 4 incoming college students-athletes and jump ahead 2 years and they are in school, handling their business, well adjusted, and for the most part excelling on the court, you'd be happy. Now we just got to start winning those close games Rockets.
