When we were the big east I was against this move. Actually I was more excited about sdsu than bsu at the time. I wanted no part of that stupid blue field. Rediculous that the ncaa let's them do that.

In all fairness, I used to live in Serra Mesa, which is super close to Qualcomm Stadium, and I attended a lot of Chargers\Padres games. You're right. SD fans can be pretty fair-weathered fans. Hopefully they're much more loyal to SDSU football.

For SDST to have a chance, they have win the rest, with not a strong schedule, and beat a what would be a 3 loss Boise State team.

Then, as you suggest, hope that Navy (very unlikely with loss to Memphis) or Memphis wins the American. But for Navy or Memphis to accomplish that they would have to beat, most likely, an undefeated UCF or USF team. Then they would have to hope that their resume is good enough to get them in with the committee. Lots of ifs, ands, or buts there.
