I tend to agree Cmett that this is misguided, however. Miltary Cirlcle/JANAF is a complete mess, and just adding light rail and redeveloping Military Circle into something like a Town Center will not change that fact. Yes, something needs to happen there, but I think it is probably a 50+ year plan. They need to get everything around Military Circle Mall taken care of before they move on to anything else in that area.

They are certainly working on it. Converting the mall into office space and getting movement mortgage and sentara to move in was a great job by the city. Janaf needs to be next.

I agree that what they have done so far is great, and I think they need to stay the course. Just don't think the time is right to commit to putting light rail there yet. JANAF is not going anywhere anytime soon. Like I said, 50+year plan. There are just too many properties that need to be bought up and redeveloped to make anything happen quickly there.

In 50+ years we will have fully automated vehicles. Maybe we should focus on a wall to keep the water out instead

Our firm is a part of a Coastal Resilience study being done by ODU. It's impacting us now and is a much greater threat to our transportation than traffic jams.

So out of curiosity, can anything really be done that will help the area while still being cost effective? A giant tide gate at the mouth of the Chesapeake seems like the only thing that could save us, but I assume that's impossible. What about an option to offer a buyout to all the homes in the flood-prone areas which will allow people to build new homes +8 ft higher and raise all the roads. That would be sad for all those 100+ year old homes. Also sounds really expensive. Or do we just let the city sink?

I think that is a non-starter with the Navy. But since you brought it up, here's an interesting project. Sucks to see all that history slowly going under the sea.

Look at this! Light rail being removed in 1947 at the corner of Hampton Blvd. and Buckingham Ave. I wonder why they removed it.

All around the US light rail was being removed. Big Auto more than likely had something to do with it.

Thought this was interesting

I'm more in favor of a future automated pod system over light rail. Services much more of the city and is more flexible with it's growth. Plus you are not locked into a specific type of tech that can become obsolete and very expensive to maintain. PLUS a far less red tape to deal with.

Something like this is not really all that far away either. 8-10 years for the light rail extension to be laid down if it doesn't get any delays. That is a massive amount of time to increase the capability of automated cars/buses/pods and other ways to service communities a la uber/lyft style pickup / drop offs run by a city or community.

Wvu has one of the original pod systems I believe.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

General Motors bought the rail lines up and dismantled them so people would use buses and cars instead.

Has the city made a decision on which western route they are going to endorse before the next study to compare it to the eastern route.

Damn I hope this thing goes to ODU. Would be so stupid otherwise.

As soon as I hear anything or it's made public, I will post it.

As a homeowner of the west side, I hope it goes through ODU. Also, the people who are more likely to use it live on the west side of the city. But development is a major factor and there are a lot more opportunities on the east side of the city.

If they want to goose ridership among younger people, they could name the Tide's train cars "pods". Wait, do they still eat Tide pods? The meme economy is so unstable.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the crooks in charge of the City of Norfolk. Quite possible, perhaps even probable, they will double down on the current failiure and ensure the route only goes through minority neighborhoods while ODU/Ghent get bypassed completely.

I think that's debatable. there is a ton of opportunity along 26th and 27th streets between monticello and hampton blvd. that whole area could be transformed. Good luck getting developers to try to convince people that military hwy area is getting better when if you look around. Its clearly not.

Considering development would be doubling down on stupid. That is exactly the argument they used to sell the starter line and that hasn't spurred any development. They need to build it for the residents to have riders or they need to tear the thing down and save the money.

It's not that debatable. You're talking about maybe 10 city blocks, with a lot of it either being industrial or residential. Military highway offers miles of development in an area that doesn't have the flood risks the west side presents.

Developers are already building there too. Sentara is building their cancer center at Sentara Leigh. The outlet mall is right off military on Northampton. Ikea opens next year. There have been a lot of smaller projects on Military from the area of Lowes to Home Depot.
