RE: 2018 Rice Baseball Schedule
Usual brutal OOC schedule, made especially tough this year with back-to-back distant road series to open the season...

ice with it's usual ridiculously tough schedule, especially so this year with back-to-back road series to open the season...

Here's the OOC slate...

- @ Orlando tourney w/Rice, UCF (top 50), UVA (Top 25) and Samford
- @ Stanford x 4 (top 25)
- Gonzaga x 4 (top 50)
- Houston Baptist x 3
- Houston x 3 (top 25)-- home, away, neutral
- Sam Houston State (Top 50) x 2-- home and away
- TCU (likely Top 3)
- A&M (likely top 25)
- Texas State x 2 (Top 75)-- home and away
- Lamar x 2-- home and away

By my count that's 11 OOC games vs. likely Top 25 opposition, and another 7 OOC games against Top 50 programs.

First 10 of 11 games on the road? Ouch. If we can whether that storm at 6-5 or even 5-6 we should be in good shape for the rest of the season.

I count just 7 of 8 on the road (and 2 are neutral games).

Schedule looks decent enough - maybe not quite as hard as years past but that's probably fine. It's tough but we've had tougher. The only issue might be a lot of 5-game weeks early in the season. We'll need to have a lot of pitchers to get through those weeks, but it does appear we have a lot of pitchers.

You're right (and The Thresher wrong)-- it's 7 of our first 8 on road. And though games against UVA and Samford are neutral site, they're still road games for us. CUSA is going to be no cake walk, with USM coming off their regional hosting last year and FIU with a consensus Top 5 incoming recruiting class. And Baseball American list WKU with one of the top "under the radar" recruiting classes, featuring 10 JUCO transfers): http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/r...llSC3CP.97

RE: 2018 Rice Baseball Schedule
So were we going to be in the Astros tournament March 2-4? It seems odd that we'd be hosting HBU instead of playing in that (UH is back in that tournament this year, although it's not as strong of a field as most years).

Why is it odd? Had we not scheduled a home series that weekend we'd have but one home OOC series (Gonzaga) all year, and the schedule would be even more brutal than it already is. You're underestimating how difficult it is to play back-to-back road series-- both with distant travel required-- to open the season, with 5 of those 7 games against likely Top 15 teams. Also of note, had we played in the Minute Maid tourney vs. playing at home we would have had a schedule with more than half our games away from home. That's unheard of.

Brutal schedule, but it allows us to try and prove our worth. I love that baseball is in a position to try and challenge good teams and we actually have a hope of beating them, without the need for a miraculous performance. Hopefully this year's team is up to the tasks ahead.

didn't we have a hope of beating them last year? Weren't we in a position to challenge good teams last year? I fear a second straight sub-.500 start and another season long chase to reach .500 and/or the playoffs.

But the flip side of fear is hope, and I hope we make a strong showing and win a lot against our tough schedule.

Actually, Buddy, we were .500 against the two Top 25 teams (UT, Stanford) we played early in the year.

Give me a genuine reason you "fear" we'll have another sub-500 start and another season-long chase to reach .500? FYI-- if memory serves me, because of our brutal early OOC schedule, it has never been unusual for us to be at or around .500 over the first 10 - 15 games of the season. That actually has been the norm more times than not-- even during some of our CWS seasons.

So far in Fall Ball the pitching is dominating the hitting. Not surprising since they've been throwing bullpen sessions since early September. Moss, Silber, Hellum and, especially, Canterino and Jefferies, have all looked good on the mound. Salinas and Petitte are both expected to be back by Spring intrasquads. On offense, though Dunlap has yet to play (I'm assuming he's still rehabbing from Summer shoulder surgery), I'm encouraged by the play of our newcomers, especially Comeaux, Aviles and Cruz.

I fully expect us to fly under the radar to start the season, most likely outside the Top 25, but if we can play .500 the first two weeks of the season (with 7 of our first 8 games on the road, and 5 of those games against likely Top 15 teams), I think we'll be in good shape.

What were we last year, something like 6-17 to start the season? I fear doing that again. I don't parse the pitching or hitting like you do - I leave that to the knowledgeable fans as yourself, but are you more confident of this team at this point than you were at this point last year? About the same?

I guess I am like a mother watching my kid play a physical sport, such as football. I hope that he does well, but at the same time I am afraid he will be hurt. The two, hope and fear, need not be exclusive of each other.

Since they both hit a wall with sore arms, starting the final month of the regular season, neither pitched over the Summer, and they've been held out of intrasquads so far. I don't believe either is injured; just precautionary.

With an ERA of what, ~ 5.3 last season, I'll believe the pitching when i see actual proven ability
