Following games online through an NIU FB portal where fans pay to access high quality streaming and allow for interactive feedback is the future.
With the money saved on traveling, parking and tickets one could afford to pay that money to NIU FB through a specialized TV or online internet streaming access.

Then why do we need stadium improvements or even stadiums for that matter?

That is the future Dogfan.

Stadium improvements costing tens of $millions are an old fashioned way to get big donors to spend. Problem one might argue is that they rarely recoup their investment.

Stadium boxes for high paying donors might pay back their costs and even generate revenue.

Students do not care for stadium improvements. Many would be angry with the tuition increases.

Fans like yourself who goto games are arguably the best and most dedicated fans.
Fans like myself who rarely goto games, but follow almost every game are arguably the majority of NIU FB fans.

Fans like myself get enjoyment from seeing NIU win games.
We prefer the convenience of home, and in my case would rather pay a premium for good NIU TV coverage then travel, park and buy a ticket.
Revenues from TV in many programs are very significant.
Why can NIU not move towards giving our alumni fan base a high quality dependable TV alternative, with archives and expert local analyses for a fee.
I would even listen to the regular irritating TCF bank commercials.

Students care very much about the quality of stadiums, its a point of pride when bringing family/friends to campus (or deciding to not invite them to gamday if the stadium is lacking), or comparing their alma matter to that of their friends that went elsewhere, P5 or G5. There will of course be student complaints when the expenditure happens, but only from a vocal minority. If the improvements are seeded by private money, not much to be said anyway.

NIU will not make money through the streaming of its games - no matter what they charge.

I would pay a premium for a high quality FB game experience. Adding options for fans online to comment and connect(not unlike this board) would create a connection and enhance the virtual experience.

Would be willing to pay at least $30 a game.(without advertisements)
For those who wish to just see the great quality TV and NIU announcers a cheaper rate would do and the advertisers would cover the remainder.

OMG. Think about what you are saying. There are 2 teams involved in each game. How much of that pie-in-the sky $30 per game do you think NIU would get (after production costs)? And how many people across the nation would pay that (or any) amount to watch our games? Now factor into that the lost ticket and concessions sales and donations to the HAF.

OK factor in the saved tens of millions of $ (the Convo center).
Football revenues sadly do not cover these costs. Do they even come close to covering these costs?

You might have 1000+ fans like myself who have saved travel costs, parking costs and ticket costs and are willing to give it directly to NIU FB.

What are the production costs?
The NIU portal could even be accessed by ticket holders while they travel on business, or might even want access to high quality TV archives and records, hopefully created by NIU communications and NIU business department.

Paying for comparative P5 stadium improvements costs tens of millions of $.
Most NIU students sadly do not care very much about NIU FB.
All NIU students care very much about student fee increases.

What did the Convo center cost?
Did NIU really need it?
I loved the old Chick Evans Field house.
Can you argue that NIU will recoup the expenditure of the Convo center?
Can you even argue that the yearly upkeep costs of the Convo are covered by basketball tickets>

You Dogfan and your fellow big guns should get box access.
I want virtual access.
When you travel and cannot goto games you can tune into virtual access.

Virtual access is for a different fan base that does not enjoy regularly traveling to DeKalb.

What is wrong with generating money from the NIU virtual fan base by providing an NIU controlled channel to tune in?

If we have to depend on streaming revenue, then it will soon be a matter of just pulling the plug on the program.

Never.

Firstly it is not either or?

There will always be a football stadium for the diehard and most dedicated fans and minority of students who want to attend games.

If you had to rely on ticket sales for the program, NIU and most schools would have pulled the plug on their FB programs many years ago.

FB is the front porch of the University and realistically should be credited for the marketing it gives NIU.

We are measuring costs versus revenues.

Stadium improvements at NIu other than VIP boxes will loose $millions of $.

Internet streaming or an online platform providing access would be far cheaper.
It would also enhance the NIU communications and NIU business schools by providing students with real world experience.
The newer fan base is internet savvy.

I am suggesting an adjacent fan outlet that generates revenue not one that replaces the NIU FB live DeKalb game experience.

Realistically, away games would be used by your season ticket fan base to give more dependable, higher quality game coverage.

This is all pie in the sky garbage. Won't ever happen. Learfield owns the broadcast rights, not NIU. Add to that plenty of restrictions from being in the MAC and their TV contracts and this whole thing, while maybe fun to discuss, is already DOA.

NIU really takes the brunt of the MAC/ESPN TV deal. The conference gets millions to play games on weeknights, and NIU always gets the most weeknight games, doing the most damage to their ticket sales. Meanwhile the EMUs and Kents collect the same checks but don't make the same sacrifice, playing more on Saturdays. I don't think the exposure is worth it for the conference and NIU more than any other.

RE: Attendance and the FBS
A few ideas on how to increase attendance:

- Create a student section (currently non-existent, Red Riot is a **** show)
- Develop a club option for students & fans (large potential, but $$$ without the right sponsor)
- Build the Pup Club (no value in the program other than it's cheap, you get a dope t-shirt, and can high-five players prior to game)
- Improve Red Black Rewards (potential for better execution, I can't tell you how many events I've attended and forgot to sign-in)
- Design a ticket renewal/donor guide that looks nice & is easy to comprehend (I know I'm not the only one that needs clarification on this stuff)

The fans are your customers. Listen to your customers and give them what they want. If you can't (such as more Saturday games), then expect the worst, but at last approach the topic and explain it to the fans. Don't sugar-coat and put a positive spin on the fans' concerns. Many fans are feeling slighted, ignored, and unimportant.

Let's see how the "Huskie Fan Advisory Board" does. Anyone have any insight into what this group has addressed so far?

I heard that the #1 concern right now is how salty the popcorn is. Once that is addressed, they MAY be able to get to lesser concerns such as this.

I think with a better stadium attendance will increase for a couple years then the product on the field and the competition will decide if it remains up.

RE: Attendance and the FBS
I have always believed in aggressive marketing and gifts to get fans to the stadium, much like the White Sox does. How about a Joe Novak Day, with the first 15,000 fans in the stadium getting a Joe Novak bobblehead? These give-aways could be paid for by sponsors with free advertising on the item. What about a Bill Baker Appreciation Day with a give-away statue of Bill with some of his calls played back at the push of a button (like "Goodbye, Toledo!"). NIU has a decent marketing department that should be used.

RE: Attendance and the FBS
NIU is not OSU, Alabama.

If a person who lives in the area (lets's say 100 miles) wants to attend a game on a weekend, they will. If they have prior commitments, they don't. Other than a few thousand fans, their lives don't revolve around NIU in ANY way. To say they are tuning in to the game, using computers/phones/IPads to watch the game is ridiculous. This is not the future for NIU to get revenue, generate a base.

Some locally would flip through through the tv and find the game if it was on seeing the name NIU. The casual fan. The aveg. person with ESPN football plan locally isn't thinking "Oh boy, NIU is on." They are looking for a big game that interests them, some their alma mater. The same way NIU transplants in small numbers all over the country do it.

I don't have the numbers to run math. I can be certain more grads, casually fans see NIU on a weekday and watch them over a Saturday morning , afternoon on the net. Even cable, other than maybe a game at a OSU or Nebraska.

But if you want to expand a stadium, raise money you can't possibly think 2-3 Saturday games a year cut it. Can blame MAC, ESPN, whatever. But the growth appeal won't be there. We can blame a lot of circumstances and people after failing to capitalize on growth after Orange Bowl. In reality, 1/2 your games on weekdays is a hard sell.

What also sucks for people like me is road weekday games. I double dipped a Miami and Bears Cincy game. Easy to plan a trip only a few days ahead of time to most MAC schools. But pretty much impossible for me and many to take the time off during the week.
