My son was in one of those one season and they suck. No focus on seeing the field, team development, or leadership. Just drill, drill, drill. Every time there was a "game", the teams were different so they never developed together to exploit the individual strengths or mitigate the weaknesses. The kids that got the ball to the far corner with their speed were rewarded even and 90% of the time they missed scoring opportunities due to selfishness and ultimately turned it over. None of them knew how to move the defense and create holes. When they did and it resulted in a great assist, the credit went to the kid that got the easy goal and not to the kid that did all the work and created the opportunity. Barely any of them had the instincts to make quick decisions. There were literally zero training sessions where Xs and Os were so much as an afterthought... just running around cones and doing moves without any context of when to use them. That's why they get destroyed everytime they play a team from Europe. You watch Germany play and they are a team and never have to use those footsie moves because they get the ball where it needs to be and don't have to spend all game getting out of trouble. US soccer is a broken disaster. There is plenty of interest and talent, but it is wasted.

I'm talking about the actual development academy that US Soccer puts on. Those clubs are monitored closely. I do agree that a large portion of the pay to play soccer clubs just pick the biggest and fastest and that is wrong.

RE: OT: Another loss in the Trump error.
OK, so in order to join the academy, you have to play for one of their clubs. In order to become a certified club, you have to apply and follow the USMNT development strategy and philosophy. The philosophy I have issue with is the "new" way of developing players. Lack of team ethos, lack of Xs and Os, and no leadership training. Nothing but skills. The idea is to get the biggest and fastest and drill the skills into them. My son already has those skills. He gets more out of the $30 rec seasons where he can focus on leadership and getting others involved by creating opportunities for them. Too bad there are no opportunities to work on these elements where everyone else is at or near his skill level.

Furthermore, the nearest certified club is 80 miles away in Richmond. Most of these clubs are in the DC area, California, and Florida with a few scattered elsewhere. Most do seem to offer scholarship programs, which is helpful to those that have a club near them, but the overall philosophy needs to change.

Yeah my son (9) was upset this morning as well. He loves soccer. Lucky for him though he is half Peruvian (my wife is Peruvian) and Peru is in the playoff match. That whole nation is going nuts and he gets to enjoy that from afar.

On the other hand, the US Men's National Rugby Team has clinched a berth in Rugby World Cup in Japan 2019. With a son in Tokyo who hangs out a rugby pub and one of his drinking buddies is the coach of the Japanese national team, I'm pretty sure I'll be going for at least some of it.

President Trump is probably laughing his ass off (as I am) at them this morning. Perhaps he'll call for revoking their tax-exempt status???
Why would you "have to invest the time"? Just don't watch. I didn't even know this **** was going on. My 3 year son plays soccer right now b/c he's a fireball and needs something to burn his energy. I hope that he gravitates to football, baseball or basketball.

Because I like soccer, just not the poser/try-hard culture that has spawned from Seattle, Portland, etc. If USA was in the field, I'd watch even though I know they would embarrass us and fail to get out of the group stage.
Now that obligation is lifted, and I'll be able to watch some real games.

There's no obligation. Soccer is gay. It's a way to wear out your kid, nothing more.

La Liga!!
Seriously though, I used to feel the same way about soccer as you until my son started playing. We learned about the different leagues/teams/rules. etc together and now I watch more soccer than football/basketball combined.

Dude, when you've got to follow other nations' leagues to see the best it's lame af. Sorry, it just is. College sports are bigger than professional soccer here. If he likes it, so be it... but I hope not.

Nah, I enjoy good European and South American soccer. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy basketball and football too, but learning about soccer opened up an entirely new world of leagues and teams. Just because they don't happen to be American leagues and teams says more about how far we have to go than anything else, IMO.
