Y.A. Tittle, RIP
Y.A. Tittle, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback who was a two-time All-SEC player at LSU, died today at age 90.

I remember going to an LSU game a couple years ago and seeing him in the stands. It amazed me that someone who was the MVP of the 1947 Cotton Bowl, was still attending ball games.

RIP ...

this might be the most iconic NFL photo of all time. True to form Tittle did not care for it. 04-cheers

I remember him beating the Phila. Eagles regularly when I was a kid. Very good quarterback.

One of the all-time greats, and a class act off-the-field, too. He went to LSU, his brother to Tulane.

Strange that he never won a championship. Like Fran Tarkenton he came close several times, but never quite got the brass ring. Extremely popular with fans in Louisiana, San Francisco, and New York.

I love his quote: “I’ve been old, bald, and ugly since I was 28.”

Strange that he never won a championship. Like Fran Tarkenton he came close several times, but never quite got the brass ring.

In both cases, I'd say it was the competition faced. Tarkenton lost title games to the 1973 Dolphins (enough said), 1974 Steelers (enough said), and the 1976 Raiders. The Raiders went 16-1 that year and 7 of their players who started that super bowl are in the Hall of Fame (enough said).

Likewise, Tittle lost to the 1961 Packers, the 1962 Packers, and the 1963 Bears. The first two are among the two best NFL teams prior to the Super Bowl era (the 1962 Packers are one of two teams of the last 60 years to be #1 in team offense and #1 in team defense. The 1961 Packers were #1 in offense, #2 in defense). The 1963 Bears had arguably the best defense of all time to that point. They set a record for fewest points given up, and led the NFL in fewest rushing yards, passing yards, and total yards, something only two other teams have ever done. The game was played in Chicago, and the Giants lost 14-10. What are you going to do?

It's a lot easier to get a ring when you play a team like last year's Falcons, who finished #25 in team defense, and lost 5 games. By comparison, the three teams the Giants lost to in the title games lost a total of 5 games among them across their three seasons.

RE: Y.A. Tittle, RIP
ESPN article on Y.A. Title from a couple years ago

I read this article when it came out. It is excellent and talks about his football years, post retirement struggles and successes and mental decline late in life. It is fairly long.. but I thought it was excellent journalism and it has a bunch of great photographs. Y.A. Tittle was a hell of a QB and one hell of a man.

Remember the money was so lousy when Tittle played that the main reason those guys played is because they loved and lived for it.

When the Benjamins became the motivation the game changed, and that is why you don't see many of today's big stars returning and just sitting in the stands. Most want to be on the sideline where they get interviewed and seen because it helps them get endorsement deals past their prime.

Yes, and also the college amenities are a lot more now. Tittle was interviewed by the local BR paper a year or so ago, and he said when he went to LSU games today he was amazed at the sheer size and scope of the spectacle.

When Tittle played there in the 1940s, Tiger Stadium was a 46,000 seat horseshoe with an open north end zone. He was quoted as saying that during his day "we had nothing like this", referring to the stadium and crowd size, athletic facilities, fire works and other entertainment razzle dazzle, Mike the Tiger's habitat, the pageantry, etc.

I saw the same thing this past weekend. I attended a conference at Ohio State and my hotel was right across the street from Ohio Stadium. And like Tiger Stadium, when you view it from the outside, it's almost like seeing the rock strata at the Grand Canyon - you can see how the additions have been built on top of each other over the years, down to the concrete remnant of the original much smaller bowl from 90 years ago.
