On a bit of a tangent - I just looked up Angelo State, thinking they may be a D-1/FCS prospect too. But they are considerably further down in terms of enrollment and such. Lone Star is still their best fit. Ditto for West Texas A&M. Who was at the highest levels of college football not that long ago, of course!

not really considering their enrollment was 9,340 in 2010 and even today 1,800+ of their students are in Fort Worth and the DFW metro area

Abilene Christian is in their second stint in the Southland Conference. The state of Texas is huge, and all the D1 schools are on the eastern half except for 6 schools. Would like to see UTPB, Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Midwestern State to move up to balance the state out. They are located in large population centers.

Here is a question. Would Southland look into expanding? They would be proactive because you do have Lamar, Sam Houston and SFA have wondering eyes for FBS. Plus, we still have issues with the Louisiana schools. Nicholls enrollment is dropping rapidly while southeastern is over 12,000 in the same area. If the lawmakers decide to merge schools? Nicholls could be gone and rolled into Southeastern. If Texas A&M merge with Texas A&M-Kingsville? Could there be a new name for the merged schools?

Tarleton State would be a good target for the Southland after losing UTA.
UCA's basketball is lost without a fellow Arkansas school. Arkansas Tech is a natural rival for UCA.
Delta State I read had eyes to join D1. They could fit in nicely with the eastern Louisiana schools of the southland.
Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist, Rogers State and SW Oklahoma State could really used a nice change of scenery to improve.
It seems all the Lone Star football schools could go D1.

You do have areas of these states that do have a growing population that could support D1.

Tarleton State-Dallas/Fort Worth
Arkansas Tech-Russellville/Arkansas River Valley
Delta State-Mississippi River Valley
Christian Brothers-Memphis
Missouri Southern-Joplin
Rogers State-Tulsa area
Oklahoma Baptist-Shawnee
Central Oklahoma-Oklahoma City
SW Oklahoma State-Weatherford (growing in population wise, I40 access)
Angelo State-San Angelo
West Texas A&M-Amarillo
Texas A&M-Kingsville-Corpus Christie/Houston
Texas A&M Commerce-?
Midwestern State-Wichita Falls
UTPB-Odessa
UTRGV-
Harding-Searcy
Henderson State-Arkadelphia
UAFS-Fort Smith
Cameron-Lawton

These are some strong candidates for Southland just in case they lose several schools.

No need for the Southland to be proactive about expanding. At 13 schools, the Southland doesn't need to expand, it needs to contract!

NoDak,

The WAC wont add football. Only one school sponsors it, and they are at the FBS level.

If the WAC adds another school it will be another California private school. And if they bring football they will either put it in the Big Sky or the Pioneer. The WAC is focusing on Southern California like a laser beam. There are a few schools there they can add (three years apart due to D-II scheduling limits) over the next several years.

They only have 11 football schools. It is uneven/. 13 schools is uneven for all sports. New Orleans and Texas A&M-Corpus Christie could leave and formed a new South Plains basketball conference. As is, if you wait before you start losing schools like the WAC? Than it could be getting the conference on the life support just like the WAC and now Big South.

David, no one else wants New Orleans or A&M-Corpus Christi except the WAC. If those schools were joining the WAC, it would have happened already.

Besides, no one outside of the P5 is forming a new conference, especially to form a new non-football conference - it would have no automatic bid for eight years, and no meaningful revenue.

Besides Tarleton St, Texas A&M-Commerce is rumored to be preparing for a Southland invite. Another rumor is that Prairie View A&M has been approached to change conferences. Because PVAM is an A&M system school, they may be open to it.

With the DII Lonestar Conference just merging with the Heartland Conference, something is up. Still suspect that Sam Houston St, SFA, and Lamar may leave for FBS or that Louisiana schools may be forced to merge, which would create havoc in the Southland.

A WAC could take them in, UTRGV starts FB with FBS as the goal and Wichita St and Mo St go fb only with the WAC. There has been coaches talk that fb schools will come to the WAC.

WAC football would be

NMSU
UTRGV
Sam Houston St
S F Austin
Lamar
Wichita St (fb only)
Mo St (fb only)

McNeese St, Incarnate Word, and UCA seem like stretches.

With the Southland having so many schools, something big is coming down the pike for it to consider expansion.

Nah....

Spoken like a true Californian who want to drop all public U football at non-AAU schools. Those Texas FCS schools have more resources than Troy and similar desires.

My guess is Azusa Pacific will be the next WAC add following the CBU transition. APU sponsors all every WAC sport except golf and they can park FB in the Pioneer. Plus seeing rival CBU go D1 probably kicked up their urgency a bit.

That idea was totally dissed on this board and others because I said Cal Bapist and Azusa Pacific had their eyes on DI from NAIA days. Glad to see that view taking hold. Doubt that AP will have full scholly fb though.

Given we still have about five years before we have to worry about Azusa Pacific, but the Big Sky would probably work with them if they want to be an affiliate since the Big Sky currently has 13 for football. Of course San Diego could theoretically be in the same position next year if it wants to leave the Pioneer League.

With New Mexico State is stuck in the WAC for awhile? I would not be surprise that the WAC goes after West Texas A&M as well. They could be an affiliate to the Southland for football, but they would be helpful for all other sports with New Mexico State as a way to cut down some travel costs.

Azusa moved up one year after Cal Baptist so they can make an annoucement this year.

The GNAC is down to five fb teams, CWU, Simon Fraser, Humblodt, W Oregon and Azusa Pac. No wonder there is push to get CETYS, a Mexican fb school into dII.

Azusa Pacific probably will move up to the WAC but they will likely have to shelve football to do it (for both logistic and financial reasons).

Which is stupid because Humboldt State may not have football after this season and it is a LONG way to travel from Washington state to Mexico.

A ticket from Seattle to San Diego prices out for less than $200. Humboldt (Arcata) travel is expensive and complicated.

That was before my time. One the WAC went into survival mode small privates became their only hope for existence.

CETYS is in Mexicali (across the border from Calexico). That's a 2.5 hour drive from downtown SD, not including the time waiting in line to cross the border. Not exactly an easy haul for the D2 programs.
