Buffalo
The Bulls are a very formidable opponent next week. I got to watch all of the 4th quarter and the 7 over times yesterday. Their back up QB went crazy yesterday. This kid threw for almost 600 yards and was throwing laser beams all over the field (with a track around it). I noticed the Buffalo receivers are very tall, which could cause some concerns for our DB's. The Bulls rank #102 on Total Defense. #124th against the run and #38 against the pass.

Their total offense is ranked 28th but very misleading considering yesterdays 7 over time circus.

They very clearly could not stop Western Michigan yesterday.

They played very closely in their other two losses against solid Minnesota and Army squads. Also worth noting, they beat a decent team in Florida Atlantic.

My guess is we will be favored by a touchdown. A game we definitely should win!!

Dear Rod. Make them respect our pass and then pound the ball down their throat. Let the defense do what they do and then Good Night Buffalo.

So we look like we should be run heavy to exploit their weakness. Do we see a heavy dose of Childers QB runs/read option plays? Part of coaching is to analyze a teams strengths and weaknesses and develop a game plan for those.

Rod's now a QB Whisperer, he'll switch quickly if the 1st guy doesn't move the team. It took 2 (or 3) offensive series to see Childers in there vs KSU; if Childers starts vs UB and doesn't do much quickly, in comes Santa (or even Graham if healthy).

I wonder if they split the reps in practice this week, I think they usually declare an #1 and give him most of the reps. Wonder if we'll hear about this mid week.

There may be many points on Carey's performance as a coach that area debatable, but the one thing we know for fact, that cannot be debated, when it comes to quarterbacks, it is a huge huge huge cluster when it comes to him.

Our defense can get humbled by Buffalo. Their QB gets rid of the ball quickly. Our offense has to run effectively and our secondary has to make big plays. Their receivers can also run after the catch. This game is scaring me more and more.

RE: Buffalo
Buffalo is the kind of team we've always struggled with - a good passing team. Yes, we have a better pass rush this year than we usually have and much better than in recent years - but their QB seems to get rid of the ball pretty quickly, not sure even Sutton Smith can get there that fast. On the other hand, Buffalo's WRs were wide open on some of those. Hopefully it will take them longer to get open against NIU. T'will be a challenge.

I don't think the move was about Santa's performance but more of a scripted alternate series against a lesser opponent. It was a great opportunity to see what Marcus could do. With the success, the script changed to him playing more. I don't think you'll see alternating series against buffalo, but more a quick hook if the QB who ever starts is unsuccessful. I think if he makes a switch during the game it may be a permanent one. Unless he sticks with Santa and puts marcus in for a play or two instead of a series.

If Buffalo's run defense is as bad as their ranking, the Huskies should be able to win easily regardless the spread.

I am not surprised. NIU's offense has not been consistent, we still have not settled on a QB and we are the visiting team. The Bulls have a prolific offense that will challenge our defense through the air.

We need to get pressure on the QB early and often.

RE: Buffalo
I think we are not giving even credit to our D. We are 8th in the nation in pass defense, only giving up 164 yards per game; Sutton Smith is 3rd in the nation with 7 sacks! Granted, we have not played teams with good passing stats; BC is averaging 164 yards per game, SDSU is averaging 150 yards per game, Kent State is averaging 96 yards per game, but Nebraska is averaging 236 yards per game.

We also may be giving too much credit to Buffalo’s passing attack. Buffalo is 36th in the nation (behind Toledo and CMU and 1 spot ahead of EMU) averaging 279 passing yards per game; however, Buffalo’s yards per game is boosted due to the 426 passing yards in the 7 OT WMU game. I am not saying Buffalo does not have a good passing attack; they do. However, let’s not make their passing attack to be more than it is; based on passing yards per game Buffalo is about equal to Nebraska. The best passing defense Buffalo has faced is Minnesota, which gives up 200 yards per game; Buffalos had 211 passing yards in that game.

Each of Buffalo’s 2 QBs (with almost identical number of attempts) have only 1 pick each; let’s hope we increase that number!

I used the stats from this site:

That Minnesota game they got most of their yards in the first half and on a couple big plays if my memory serves me correct. I lthink Anderson is a lot better than their starter.

Agreed.

I was watching that marathon UB-WMU game and I was thinking the same about how fast their QB gets rid of it. Might be faster than our rush can penetrate. I mean, even in regulation time, the UB QB put up some serious numbers against a real good team, I'm not sure our D is a leap better than WMU.

Their QB Anderson didn't seem like some flash in the pan, one game lucky, type player.

Better shot at knocking the ball down versus getting to the quarterback.

RE: Buffalo
If NIU limits the turnovers and prevents Buffalo from hitting a couple big plays they will win. Buffalo connected on four passes over 50 yards against WMU. The longest play NIU has given up on D all season is 36 yards and that was against Nebraska. NIU is a top D against both the run and pass right now so I think Buffalo will have a lot tougher time moving the ball especially if they have to sustain long drives.

On the turnover side NIU is 114 in the FBS in turnovers lost which is bottom three in the MAC while Buffalo is top three in the MAC right now. I would expect a more conservative game plan on offense as Buffalo is near the bottom of FBS in stopping the run and NIU should be able to run a lot against them. NIU had over 300 yards on the ground in last year's game and it doesn't appear Buffalo's run D has improved much this year.
