Incomplete pass reviewed?
Someone help me out...we had a pass that was clearly incomplete, and yet the play was reviewed...what were they looking at? Anyone know?

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
I thought they were looking for a “forward” lateral and then a forward pass...would have been a penalty on us.

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
This game was bizarre. There were a few calls that didn’t make sense on both sides. And then there is this...

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
My guess is they were looking at targeting on the hit the DL put on Woodside at the end of the play. He hit him pretty high and my guess is they were looking to see if it was a shot to the head.

Also, on the last EMU drive, there was a "completion" on the sideline that the receiver clearly juggled for a second. Should have been stopped to check whether he had control before he went out of bounds, but no, can't look at that one.

I thought they could have called targeting when Woodside's TD was taken away after review. Looked to me like the EMU player went a bit high on his hit there.

He's a running back in that case, and so not considered a defenseless player. High hits are ok in that case, as long as the defender doesn't lead with the crown of the helmet.

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
I thought maybe they were reviewing whether Logan had crossed the line of scrimmage. It was pretty strange when they announced a review of "an incomplete pass" for a pass that was 5 feet over the receiver's head. The crowd around me laughed and a couple of EMU players threw their hands up in the air as if to say, "What the heck?"

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
While we're at it, what was wrong with Brent Balbinot? He kept saying our last FG would do us no good and we needed a TD, when, clearly, in a 2point game, a FG would put us up enough to win if they drove down and got a three in the final minute. There was another bizarre mistake that I can't remember as well.

I also for the life of me can't figure out how we didn't get a rushing TD on the other review. He was in the end zone from the waist up. I think it preceded a missed FG.

That was also a fumble before their last touchdown. He was still moving forward. No whistle.

I didn't hear what he said but from your description I have an idea of what he was getting at. With the score 17-15 a TD plus the extra point would make it 24-15, a nine point game that would require Eastern to score twice, whereas a FG made it 20-15 so EMU could win the game with a TD (but not a FG) on their last drive----so Toledo needed a TD to put them away because a field goal left the door open for an EMU win if they could score a TD. Candle justifiably did not have enough confidence in his running game to go for the TD on 4th down. He probably felt a FG would give give his defense a better chance to prevent a loss and besides not making the TD on 4th and goal could lead to a loss of momentum while firing up EMU. If he still had Kerrin and Mancz on the O-line and Hunt in the backfield he may have opted to go for the TD on 4th and short.

Another funny one. CBS, who carried the game, still thinks we played the Chippewas.

Happy to escape with the W with all the bizarre officiating and happenings in this game. Too bad we lost our NFL caliber receiver in the process. Hope he heals up nicely and quickly.

He later corrected himself, I believe, saying basically "Oh, yeah, if we don't take the three and don't score all they need to do is get close to win" I could see going for 6 if there was three minutes left or something but they were on a short clock.

Jay Feely was awful all day.

How in the world did he think that kick was good, or went off the crossbar? You would think an NFL kicker should be able to decipher this information. My 10 year old daughter can, so...

Also, if one had been playing a game that required taking a shot every time he said "back shoulder fade", that person would be dead this morning. I swear he's trying to make "back shoulder fade" today's version of "bubble screen". Every damn out route was a back shoulder fade in his eyes.

I would suggest that he stick to talking about kicking, but... yeah.

I think they all go to the same school of sports broadcasting, the one where they're taught that talky hands thing. He's probably only on Ch 1.

there was 2:58 left after we kicked the field goal, so I see your point 03-wink

You might be thinking of another play, on the flea flicker they reviewed, Woodside was about 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage when he threw it. I thought they were looking for targeting as he was hit after the throw. I thought it was rouging the passer because the rusher had plenty of time to avoid the hit he gave. He took a step after the ball was gone and made no attempt to pull up. Also thought he still hit Woodside high. The announcers were saying they were looking to see if one of the laterals was forward, thus cannot have two forward passes.

In his defense, I think he was trying to make the call from the press tower using just his view and not a monitor. Made it tougher to see the angle even though it was way off the mark. You would have thought his partner would have bailed him out before they went to commercial break, but not sure what he could have said that would not have embarrassed him - like "what game are you watching?"

RE: Incomplete pass reviewed?
Another question on the officiating...did I not hear us get a holding call on EMU inside the 5 and it did not give us an automatic first down? That was one of the most confusing games called by our great MAC officials that I can remember in recent times. Glad for the win. Probably better than we think as EMU has a GOOD D for sure. Lets hope they can win vs, WMU and NIU for a change.

I think holding just gives 5 yd penalty or half the distance in this case.
