McGrath was the right choice to build on success
There was a lot of speculation on the right hire and now it looks like they hit a HR. Yes, the team hasn't played a game, but the signs are there. The coaching staff seems like they are totally in and very qualified. McGrath took over a tough situation but made the most of what he could get in the Spring signing period. It looks like he has gathered players that can play at this level with both guards possessing plus shooting skills and good length for position. He got a true big and a quick PG that has some skills. It could have even been better if the kid didn't go to Kansas State at the last minute.

Fast forward to this class and the staff already has solid verbals from a crafty PG that has plus passing skills and handles with a good release to recently getting a long SG/WF with a very good overall game that had big time offers. That really speaks volumes to what players think about the program direction. He has two to give and they will most certainly go to bigs. I'd be surprised if he doesn't land 2 good ones given the system that he plays.

UNCW has made a few big mistakes in the past and was not able to sustain excellent hoops over the long haul. This hire definitely doesn't look like a mistake. They practice with purpose and have a defined plan. You can see it already and that's encouraging.

UNCW lost more offensive firepower than practically any team in the nation. Let's just see how the team plays with what they have this year as fans. It's about implementing a system right now and the cupboard isn't completely barren although very inexperienced and not quite optimal for this system. Next year should even be better although we lose Talley. And let me tell you, I absolutely love his game...always have. He's just a winner. He plays the game the right way period. He will set the table, he's a leader/good teammate, make the great pass, drive and finish or get fouled, he will hound somebody and is a killer in transition. Great PG IMHO!

I'm very encouraged....but I think I'll wait until we win a game or two before I get quite as enthusiastic as you seem to be!

But that's Bill...a homer for life!

Gotta be a homer man. That's what worries me about the color guy that we have now. When we play ECTC, he's going to have a hard time not singing their praises.

I don't think any of us really liked him too much.

Bill it certainly appears good so far, but games are not won on paper. let's see how it plays out before we put him in the UNCW HOF.

Have we forgotten the elation over the 7 "high quality" recruits Buzz put on the table from the start?

Yes, McGrath APPEARS to be a solid guy who has put together a quality coaching staff. And his two HS commits APPEAR to be decent on paper. But, we've seen this before. Two really bad hires and one really good hire since the golden years.

Let's wait until we have half a season under our belts before making any declarations as to whether we made the "right hire", shall we?

RE: McGrath was the right choice to build on success
Sorry guys, but I'm with Bill here. Life is getting shorter every day for me. So I'm going to enjoy the excitement of what could be. Unless/until McGrath flops I'm all on board. He deserves the support of Seahawk Nation. He's talked a good game and he is recruiting and scoring good looking players. I have never felt a new coach should be immediately placed on the gallows and told to find a way out. He's doing his part, and as a fan, I will do mine. But, to each his/her own.

I'm certainly not going to support him or the program any less. My point was lets see on the court before we put him in the HOF.

I find myself in agreement with 33. My support is with the man until he proves to be unworthy of it. I've seen a lot of coaches over the years (from Coach Brooks up to Coach McGrath) and I have given each my support until I felt they no longer earned or deserved it.

Stating you are not ready to declare a new coach is the "right hire" in no way means you don't support the coach...unless you said "we made the wrong hire".

McGrath may very well be the "right hire", but who knows? I would make that statement for any new coach...just as I would support any new coach. You can do both ya' know, they aren't at odds with each other.

04-cheers

Early signs are good:

* I like the renewed focus to developing a "total big man". Cacok adding a jumper will help him take his game to another level.

* The pedigree of assistant coaches McGrath has brought in is high. The combination of experience and devoted skillsets (such as Wolf being our "big man" specialist) have me very excited about the ENTIRE coaching staff. And this is coming from a UNC hater.

* The caliber of recruits brought in thus far looks strong too. You don't know what they're capable of until they start playing D-I competition, but at least on paper, our incoming players are promising. At least as promising as just about any other new coach's recruiting class can be before getting a season under his belt.

I'm bullish on McGrath. That doesn't me I'm sold on him, but I'm feeling good given the limited information we have.

That's a fair position to have. Can't say i really disagree with anything there.

What hurt us last year was the Coaches inability or refusal to deviate from his plan. That was evident when we played UVA. I think C.B. has seen enough different styles of play and coaching to enable him to go from Man to Zone defense as needed. Almost every game we lost last year was due to this. This isn't the NBA, you can't play man defense solely and expect to win every game.

That is very true. Incredibly frustrating at times particularly when the refs were calling a tight game

We also were very small at our guard spots and had a hard time stopping penetration playing man. As a result, Cacock was in the position of trying to defend his man as well as a driving guard. This ended up I fouls or easy layups.

I don't know if McGrath will have a zone defense when needed, but I sure hope so.
