Essential FBS Rivalries? (Poll #2)
Poll #1: http://csnbbs.com/thread-829175.html
Poll #3: http://csnbbs.com/thread-829328.html

As I explored in a previous thread, there are 84 pairs of FBS teams that have played one another annually for at least 30 years and are still actively playing one another. Some are very obviously what one would call "essential" rivalries, meaning both teams would likely seek to retain the matchup each year even in the event of a realignment that separated them into different divisions or conferences. In some cases, this has already happened, or they were never in the same conference/division to begin with.

Other pairs aren't particularly essential and may primarily be the result of sharing a conference/division and not any strong desire to play. These matchups would be sacrificed as annual games in the event of a realignment that separated the teams.

The line between essential and non-essential is rather blurry, so I thought I'd post a poll to see what the realignment forum thinks. Actually, I have to post two polls, because the limit on poll options is 16.

Here are the matchups which may or may not be essential. The year in parentheses is the first year of the current run of annual matchups.

Air Force/Wyoming (1980)
Alabama/LSU (1964)
Alabama/Mississippi State (1948)
Arkansas/Ole Miss (1981)
Baylor/Texas (1945)
Baylor/Texas Tech (1956)
California/USC (1926)
Central Michigan/Eastern Michigan (1972)
Central Michigan/Western Michigan (1973)
Clemson/Georgia Tech (1983)
Clemson/NC State (1971)
Duke/Georgia Tech (1933)
Duke/Virginia (1963)
Duke/Wake Forest (1967)
Eastern Michigan/Western Michigan (1978)
Florida/LSU (1971)
Georgia/Vanderbilt (1968)
Iowa/Minnesota (1931)
Iowa State/Kansas State (1917)
Kentucky/Tennessee (1944)
Kentucky/Vanderbilt (1953)
LSU/Mississippi State (1944)
LSU/Ole Miss (1945)
NC State/Wake Forest (1910)
North Carolina/Virginia (1919)
Ole Miss/Vanderbilt (1970)
Pittsburgh/Syracuse (1955)
Stanford/UCLA (1946)
Texas/Texas Tech (1960)
Toledo/Western Michigan (1950)

These are what I would consider essential rivalries:

Air Force/Army (1971)
Air Force/Colorado State (1978)
Air Force/Navy (1972)
Alabama/Auburn (1948)
Alabama/Tennessee (1944)
Arizona/Arizona State (1946)
Army/Navy (1930)
Auburn/Georgia (1944)
Bowling Green/Toledo (1948)
California/Stanford (1946)
California/UCLA (1933)
Cincinnati/Miami-OH (1945)
Clemson/South Carolina (1909)
Colorado State/Wyoming (1946)
Duke/North Carolina (1922)
Florida/Florida State (1958)
Florida/Georgia (1944)
Florida State/Miami-FL (1969)
Georgia/Georgia Tech (1925)
Illinois/Northwestern (1927)
Indiana/Purdue (1920)
Iowa/Iowa State (1977)
Kansas/Kansas State (1911)
Miami-OH/Ohio (1945)
Michigan/Michigan State (1945)
Michigan/Ohio State (1918)
Minnesota/Wisconsin (1907)
Navy/Notre Dame (1927)
New Mexico/New Mexico State (1946)
NC State/North Carolina (1953)
Notre Dame/USC (1946)
Oklahoma/Oklahoma State (1910)
Oklahoma/Texas (1929)
Mississippi State/Ole Miss (1944)
Oregon/Oregon State (1945)
Tennessee/Vanderbilt (1945)
Stanford/USC (1946)
UCLA/USC (1936)
Virginia/Virginia Tech (1970)
Washington/Washington State (1945)

And I'm fairly certain these are not essential:

Auburn/Mississippi State (1955)
Ball State/Central Michigan (1977)
Ball State/Eastern Michigan (1973)
Ball State/Toledo (1975)
Central Michigan/Toledo (1975)
Clemson/Wake Forest (1953)
Eastern Michigan/Toledo (1977)
Florida/Kentucky (1967)
Georgia/Kentucky (1956)
Georgia Tech/North Carolina (1980)
Georgia Tech/Virginia (1982)
Iowa State/Kansas (1932)
Kent State/Miami-OH (1955)
Kent State/Ohio (1949)

This more about what is than what should be. 03-wink

Only three of those are active, and they haven't been consecutively played long enough:

UCF/USF (since 2013)
PSU/Pitt (since 2016, not scheduled beyond 2019)
SMU/TCU (since 2007, not scheduled beyond 2019)

Most of these are essential. WVU/Pitt, PSU/Pitt, ND/BC, Cincy/UofL, TCU/SMU all have more history despite not playing consecutive years than most on this list.

I don't see BC/ND, UC/UL, or Pitt/WVU returning to annual matchups in the near future unless there's some realignment (e.g., if UC and ND join the ACC, the first two can resume annually). SMU/TCU will likely continue, and I'm hoping PSU/Pitt will catch on again too. Either that or Pitt/WVU.

SMU/TCU is an interesting case because they missed 2006 for some reason, but other than that and the two years SMU was death-penaltied, the matchup goes back to 1926. I can certainly make allowances for years in which at least one school didn't field a team. Perhaps I can also make an allowances for matchups in which just one year was skipped despite both schools fielding teams.

Of course, this wouldn't really account for the BYU/Utah rivalry, in which no games were scheduled for 2014 or 2015, even though they ended up meeting in a bowl game in 2015. I could extend the gap to two years, but then why not three, four, etc.? Where you draw the line is one trouble with trying to define these sorts of things.

Toledo/Western Michigan (1950)

Do you know why so many rivalries only date back to 1944? It is because many schools suspended teams during the peak of WWII due to a manpower shortage. IMO, this severely skews your survey. Except for WWII Auburn played Georgia continually since 1894. Auburn played Georgia Tech continually since 1892 until 1944, and then again until 1978.

I understand it was the war, but it doesn't matter here. A matchup only has to be active and to have been played for 30 straight years up to the present to make the list. Anything beyond 30 is just gravy. No matchups in the list would change, just the year in parentheses.

It is however relevant to the quality of a rival that it has endured 100 years as opposed to thirty, particularly as it relates to the importance of keeping, or abandoning the rivalry.

I think the actual hatred has more to do with a rivalry than just playing every year. In 26 years are people going to think Rutgers and OSU are rivals? No, but Pitt and PSU will still hate each other. UCF and USF will still hate each other.

I can add more chronological information, but I'm relying on those here who already know about the rivalries in the poll to help determine whether they're essential or not.

If anyone disputes my specific placement of any rivalries under the essential or non-essential lists, please let me know! Those were just the ones I thought I was sure about. :)

That's fine, it's your project. I was just noting the difference in perspectives. I'm old enough that the South Carolina and Arkansas are still newbies in the SEC to me. Most of my life we traveled to Atlanta every other year for Tech and had a pep rally and parade when we played them here. Auburn / Alabama were stopped after endless contention over a wide array of oft debated issues, but those grew violent when Alabama used its political influence to try to close Auburn by making several pushes to do so from the late 1800's through the 1920's. When a dispute following one of the games allegedly resulted in a homicide the game was stopped and not resumed until an act of the Alabama legislature mandated it. But Auburn has 3 major rivals historically. Tech was a big deal. It ended when they joined the ACC. Georgia is more like two siblings getting ticked enough to fight. We simply hate the Bammers.

I just note that often on this board if it happened before Millennials were born it's like it never happened. 03-wink

I'm genuinely curious:

Why would you consider among others Georgia/Vandy, Texas/TxTech, LSU/MissState 'rivals'? LSU/Ole Miss without a doubt, but MSU?

Just because two teams have played a bunch, doesn't mean they're 'rivals'. I don't think Pitt/PennState is a rivalry as much as we think it is. Pitt/WV absolutely though

Kent State/Ohio (1949)
Toledo/Western Michigan (1950)

One of the driving forces of the old 16 team WAC breaking up was Air Force being forced into a quad that did not include CSU and WYo and was mostly texas teams. Those games are considered very important and critical to all three teams and Air Force wanted no part of losing games with CSU and WYo.

RE: Essential FBS Rivalries? (Poll #2)

I don't necessarily consider any matchups in the poll to be rivalries. That's why I made the poll. The fact is that these pairs of teams have played each other a lot, and for at least 30 years up to the present, so I just wanted to get the opinions of those here who are more knowledgable about the sport than I am.

And I'm fairly certain these are not essential:

Air Force/Wyoming (1980)
Auburn/Mississippi State (1955)
Ball State/Central Michigan (1977)
Ball State/Eastern Michigan (1973)
Ball State/Toledo (1975)
Central Michigan/Toledo (1975)
Clemson/Wake Forest (1953)
Eastern Michigan/Toledo (1977)
Florida/Kentucky (1967)
Georgia/Kentucky (1956)
Georgia Tech/North Carolina (1980)
Georgia Tech/Virginia (1982)
Iowa State/Kansas (1932)
Kent State/Miami-OH (1955)
Kent State/Ohio (1949)
Toledo/Western Michigan (1950)

Interesting -- I knew that Air Force objected to being separated from CSU, but I didn't think there was anything strong between AFA and Wyoming, despite how many times they played. I've added AFA/Wyo as an option in the third poll: http://csnbbs.com/thread-829328.html
