Omaha AD Trev Alberts pulls name from consideration for Nebraska AD job
Just thought I'd put this here since I some speculation on here that he's a Lincoln toadie and was just angling for the UNL job once it opens up.

http://www.omaha.com/uno/maverick-coache...b8f27.html

Quote:For those who already had envisioned University of Nebraska at Omaha Athletic Director Trev Alberts in the A.D.’s office at Nebraska after Shawn Eichorst was fired, here’s a little secret.

“I really hadn’t given it a lot of thought,” Alberts told The World-Herald. “This idea that I was dreaming every night of being in another job ... that’s just not who I am. I never pursued any other jobs.”

And he’s not now, either.

Alberts, an All-American at Nebraska in the classroom and on the football field in the early 1990s as an outside linebacker, told UNO coaches and staff in an email Wednesday morning that “after some prayerful consideration” he won’t pursue the opening at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“While UNO isn’t UNL,” Alberts said, “I work for the University of Nebraska. And I am honored to do that.”

Alberts has been athletic director at UNO since 2009. Arguably, the most noticeable action in his eight years was being part of the decision-making process for UNO to drop football and wrestling in March 2011 while moving from Division II to Division I.

Did being involved in dropping Maverick football affect how Alberts felt about seeking the A.D. job at Nebraska someday?

“I haven’t put a lot of thought into that,” he said. “I would only say the commitment I made to myself when I started in 2009 is that I was going to do everything I possibly could to make decisions and recommendations that I thought were in the best long-term interest of UNO athletics.

“It’s always about the institution. From time to time, those decisions and recommendations may not be in your personal best interest. I wasn’t naive to that fact. And I wasn’t trying to position myself for other opportunities.”

Gene DeFilippo from search firm Turnkey Sports and Entertainment — and a former A.D. at Boston College and Villanova — contacted Alberts about entering Nebraska’s process. According to Alberts’ UNO contract, he must contact his direct superior if approached about or looking to pursue other work.

Alberts said he called interim UNO Chancellor Jeffrey Gold. Alberts hasn’t spoken with NU System President Hank Bounds.

“The process needs to be respected,” Alberts said. “I want to allow them to run a good process and get the best athletic director they can to help my alma mater be successful.”

Lincoln is a career-ender. Very smart move by Alberts.

Their football fans think they should be Alabama, when the fact is that they're Iowa with red uniforms.

Wow.

Comparing them to Iowa changes it from being an insult to a downright low blow....

LOL

Schools in the great plains would probably fare well with a "Nebraska guy" or an "Iowa guy" or a "Kansas guy" or "whatever State guy".

It's difficult enough to be in a state that has little to no top recruits. Those schools need people that are committed to those schools for it to work.

I believe those schools will eventually be on the upswing. Nebraska has had several good runs. Iowa has really high peaks in between deserts. And the rest have had solid seasons.

Me too!

"I am officially withdrawing my name from consideration for the Athletic Director position at the University of Nebraska. It is a great institution but I have chosen to continue my career as an electrician."

Your best post ever on this site, bravo.

The amount of politics going on at a school like Nebraska right now has to be incredible. But then again, Alabama came back with Saban so you never know about the Huskers even though their circumstances during their down years are very different.

RE: Omaha AD Trev Alberts pulls name from consideration for Nebraska AD job
It's not like Nebraska, or Iowa for that matter, are bad football programs. They both have great stadiums that get filled with great fans who are very passionate about the program. Both schools are willing to spend as much as almost any other program in the country spends.

But neither are in a position (anymore) to be year in, year out national contenders. More like a once every 15-20 years type programs. Iowa had its turn in 2015. Great year to be a Hawkeye.

As many on this board have explained, Nebraska's old history -- and let's be honest here, it is old history now at this point people -- came during a rules environment that is wildly different than it is now.

In today's environment, with "only" 85 scholarships, and "strict" rules and enforcement of those rules on recruiting ... Nebraska no longer has the advantages that they parlayed in the past to success.

Every state from the Great Plains on east, and south of the NE region of the country (with the Dakotas being the only exceptions) has at least one major state public university that is a P5 football program, and many have two (or more). Those schools are always going to have a built-in advantage recruiting in-state kids, and some advantage recruiting in-region kids, over out-region schools.

Nebraska, like Iowa, is a small state that doesn't produce lots of high-end football talent. The cachet of the brand is fading fast or completely faded by this point. And it's not coming back. Why would a five-star high school player in Texas pass over other programs to go play for Nebraska, now?? A Texas player who says "I'm going to play for Nebraska" isn't a big deal any more. No more than the same kid saying "I'm going to play for Iowa".

I mean ... just read this stuff:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/co...6a9636219f

Quote:The vibe around Nebraska football is eerily similar to what it was like the last time the Cornhuskers’ 1997 national championship team gathered in Lincoln for a reunion.

That was in 2007. On a gloomy afternoon, and with the men who were part of Tom Osborne’s mid-1990s dominance in attendance, Bill Callahan’s Huskers lost 45-14 to Oklahoma State in what then was the most lopsided home loss since 1958. The athletic director who hired Callahan, Steve Pederson, was fired the following Monday. Osborne was named interim AD the next day, and Callahan was fired at the end of a 5-7 season.

This weekend, players, coaches and staff members from the ‘97 team are expected to be on hand for their 20-year reunion, and they’ll attend Saturday night’s game against ninth-ranked Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten). Athletic director Shawn Eichorst, who hired third-year coach Mike Riley, was fired two weeks ago. Former Husker great Dave Rimington has taken over as interim AD, and Riley’s status is very much in question as the Huskers (3-2, 2-2) enter a crucial stretch of games.

Sorry, but tonight Nebraska is going to get punked by Wisconsin. No chance of any "20 year spirit" or whatever they're trying to conjure up.

These guys are still living in the past. 20 years ago! That era is gone and is never coming back.

That's the main reason why I don't trust anything he says or does.

Nebraska has had three Heisman winners, but the talk here is like all of them are from Florida or Texas. Could not be further from the truth.

Johnny Rodgers - born in Omaha
Eric Crouch -born in Omaha
Mike Rozier - born in Camden, NJ but played JC ball in Coffeyville, KS

The majority of their lineman and LB'S and many of their skill positions have been from Nebraska too. Texas used to provide depth, but so did the old walkon program where residents live for the Huskers. Nebraska had a good run, but the talent locally hasn't been stellar lately, but could return just based on probability.

That was leaked, and the World-Herald called him and said they were breaking the news the next morning regardless of what he had to say, so his hand was forced. I'm not happy about how that was handled either, but I can't really fault him.

Wisc 38 Neb 17

Not a drubbing, but a solid win. Certainly no defending the honor of the 20 year reunion group.
