Catalonia Votes for Independence from Spain
Link to Zerohedge Article

Surprised no one posted about this yet. Catalonia voted for independence from Spain recently. The Spanish government tried heavily handed tactics and violence to stop the vote as a result, Catalans voted for independence in higher numbers than expected. Now they are protesting and shutting down cities to be heard.

I wonder if this will get the Basques all fired up, too.

When I was in Barcelona (way back in 99) it was Catalan flags everywhere off apt balconies, hardly ever Spain's national flag. They really feel completely separate from Spanish society.

RE: Catalonia Votes for Independence from Spain
It's been mentioned over in the AAC soccer thread primarily because of Barca. Apparently there was a 90% vote for independence. However, I wouldn't read too much into that as I'd imagine a ton more people did not vote than actually did vote. Only the die-hards for independence would risk getting their collective heads beat in merely to cast a vote. I can see both sides, however, Madrid's actions were poor from the get go and may have only served to increase Catalan's desire for independence going forward.

Until I clicked I kept reading "California." I knew they did lots of useless things out there, but voting for independence from Spain 200 years later seems flaky even for California!

They also let people vote anywhere. To prove how sloppy the polling was, one anti-independence person voted in 4 different places. Control over ballot boxes was non-existent as they kept moving them.

Basically, it made on-line polls look credible.

From what I've read, folks had to leave designated polling locations out of fear of being shot, etc. So, to make sure they were able to cast a vote, they traveled to smaller cities out of Madrid's cross-hairs. I'm sure there were other irregularities as this wasn't even a sanctioned vote. These folks just wanted the choice to vote, that's all.
