Prof: 'meritocracy' is a 'whiteness ideology'

A Pennsylvania State University-Brandywine professor thinks college faculty need to do more to undermine their students' belief in "meritocracy" and the value of "hard work."
The students are "are socialized to believe that we got to where we are…because of our own individual efforts," according to the prof, who wants colleagues to stop "perpetuating and reifying whiteness."

Sounds like she is a racist to me. Only "white culture" is hard working?

Perhaps the African-American community as a group needs to acknowledge the elephant in the room. So are they sure that elephant is white people and white racism?

She's saying America (and the world) is not a true meritocracy and hard work is not an automatic ticket to success. Seemed pretty clear to me.

Essentially. I'm not saying I totally agree, although I know where she's coming from. However, "hard work is a white ideology" is a massive distortion.

Remember what used to be known as the "Protestant work ethic?"

Well, the Protestants that created it didn't come from any other place than Europe.

I'm a Catholic and the "protestant work ethic" bit used to offend me. Until I thought about it and realized that it's true.

Most other Catholics I know who achieve financial success will use that success to get more leisure time and to raise a strong family. But most Protestants I know will continue to work hard to accumulate wealth and possessions. That's how our country was built.

She's trying to undermine the idea that hard work yield benefit... That's toxic! Go into HS classes or freshman seminars and tell those AA kids trying to break the cycle of poverty.... You know hard work is really a flawed white concept..

Well which philosophy supports a welfare state that perpetuates itself by buying votes bought from the taxes of those who work? The welfare state is the driving force behind poverty and ignorance. They pay just enough to keep it going. That's a life with little hopes or dreams. I've worked with them before. The happiest are those who find a way to work their way out of it and they are usually the first to show the next person how to get out of it. Those people deserve our support and praise. Not this Putz who is perpetuating a destructive cycle by trying to use blame to support a failed system.

You see the issue is not whether "all" hard working people achieve success. The issue is that with hard work you don't have to live impoverished and you can gain a larger say and control over your future. All success is incremental but just because it is incremental doesn't mean it is limited.
