Completely different team than the one we faced last year- expect good things this season!

Except for the turnovers that was the best our offense played this year. It was also the best defensive effort maybe in history of the school. MAC officiating is pretty inconsistent. Some crews call it tight, some let a lot go, some are just bad. We usually get a raw deal in the B10 games so it was nice seeing the breaks go out way in a big game.

RE: Aztec Game Thoughts
Officiating crews may call a game tighter when they feel it is getting out of hand. It sounds as if there was a lot of trash talking prior to and during the game. That's probably why the officials were calling personal fouls and trying to get control of the game.

What kind of a man lashes out at his nineteen year old inexperienced quarterback after the kid makes an ill-advised throw? There is a time and place to get on a kid, but it is NOT in heat of moment when the young man is devastated because he feels like he just let down his entire team. There was a possibility that NIU might need Santacaterina to come back on the field and win the game. Breaking his spirit isn't going to do a bit of good. Coach Carey is a punk, he'll always be a punk, and this program needs to be rid of him

Well, I listened to the game and the NIu
sideline guy said that Carey was emphasizing positives to Santa C and that he was still having a great game and was coaching him up while explaining what he had to do and what he did wrong. This from a guy who was standing there on the sideline. Sorry, but your thoughts don't hold water here. Haters gonna hate.

The players have to adjust to how the refs are calling a game. Simple as that. They say holding happens on every play. We wouldn't watch football if it was called every play. If u want to win u adjust.

RE: Aztec Game Thoughts
My last thought then I am done with SDSU. Although I don't like the pass call, I understand it. I would have liked it if it was from the 40 yard line not the 20. Santa in his brief run as the QB has added an exciting element to our offense; now that the DBs have to respect tthe deep pass; defenses cannot stack the box which has significantly helped our run game Against Nebraska we could have only come back to win the game if we passed deep; Santa had to step up, and he did. Against SDSU, we are only in the game, and we were only able to come back from a huge halftime deficient by completing deep passes, again Santa stepped up. So I get the temptation to go to the well again. This time it didn't work. Santa has to make either a better decision, or a better pass in that situation, he did neither. He owned it; now he has to learn from it. And BTW, I don't think Carey's sideline ass chewing was that bad. Time to move on.

RE: Aztec Game Thoughts
Just got back from SD. My vantage point at the game was awesome (50 yard line row 20 NIU side of the field).

Our punter Ferense is awesome.

At the same time, our kickoffs were awful. Both in distance and coverage.

Our Defense played a fantastic game. Anytime you can hold a high powered offense under 300 yards of total offense in a game, you did something right.

The O-line played exceptionally when running the ball. The were reasonable in the pass game.

Santa is a mixed bag and plays like a red-shirt Sophomore who tried too hard. Although his interceptions were poorly timed and painful to watch, he did do a few things right. The first 2 opening drives were well executed on his part.

Our punter Ferense (sp?) was great. I have liked him since his first game. He was great on Saturday. Decent hang time, accuracy and distance.

Kickoffs still lack depth and coverage was not good at all.

I believe the game was lost by the coaches again. In the 4th quarter, when we were driving the field (running plays mostly) the first down pass that was picked off should have been a running play. We were running all over them. Make the stop the run. It will reduce the defensive backs so the 5-7 yard outs open up or fakes up the middle to a quick slant. Our passing game lacks imagination. Sorry to say this, from my seat, we should have been running 60-65% or the time against SDSU. The line was getting the job done.

Santa is young and we really don't know his potential, but stick with him for the season. I was also a little surprised to see Childer's in the game as much as he was. His 2 pass attempts were awful.

Looking forward to MAC play, we should be able to run the MAC schedule this year. I believe WM is the only team that will give us a good game. Maybe Toledo. But, I believe NIU is the best MAC team this year. Now is there chance to prove it.

The punter did have one short punt that gave SDSU a short field - went off the side of his foot. That's the only bad punt I can recall this year though. He's done better than most NIU punters I can remember.

Some people probably won't agree, but Santa reminds me a lot of Chandler his RS Soph year for us. Will only get better with more in game play.

His very first punt of the year wasn't good. Line drive if I recall correctly. Carey coached him up right after and he has been great since.

I like having NIU on the west stands side. I get to see that interaction that I was missing all those other years.

Glad someone reminded me on Childers, I'm fine with coming in 2-3 times a game for some wildcat action...but did you see those throws?!?!! oh my goodness, ducks. dying ducks. Made me realize we are sunk if Graham and Santa both go down. Anyone that thought he should have won the battle this year must not have seen him throw. Hopefully it's something he can develop.

Before the spring game Childers wasn't even mentioned. Had a good spring game to get in the conversation. Then in August it turned into a 2 QB race. He is a very good runner.

If you remember Lynch's sophomore year he threw sparingly but ran well. Nobody knew if he could throw enough to be competitive in his junior year. He did and the rest is history.

This is why I don't mind seeing Childers come in from time to time to get a bit of experience and learn and grow. Challenges the defense in different ways. I expect to see 2 or 3 QBs on Saturday.

I'll keep saying that QB is the hardest position to play and you get better by doing.

I only remember one throw for Childers and that was well short of the WR but not any worse than a few I've seen Graham and Santa throw. I'm hoping we can get a big lead against Kent so he can get some more reps in games.

RE: Aztec Game Thoughts
he had 2 throws into the ground. Maybe the play wasn't there, but they were horrible throws. I can understand one or 2 times a game to take the running pressure off of Santa, but they need to do a better job of play selection for him in the passing game if they are going to have him throw.

Yes, he also reminded me of Lynch a little when he was a RS Soph.

I must have missed the bad punt in the SDSU game. I remember him booming a couple of great punts in the game. # inside the 20 of SDSU.

I believe those were Childers first throws in a game. I'll wait to see a little more before I make any judgments on him. And he does run the ball pretty well so it's nice to give Santa a breather here and there.

It seems to me that Childers is a run option to keep Santa injury free. It's a planned process and it gives Childers some game action ala Harnish/Lynch, even though Marcus hasn't reeled off one of Jordans 80 yard bursts yet.
