RE: C-USA Football Coaching Changes
Of course a good coach can improve Rice. Look what Graham did in two years even without his recruits.

Don't forget LSU.

LSU was not a representative choice - selecting a guy with a poor track record who was a "good guy". They will fix it soon.

I was just going with "coaching changes".

Rice is a bottom 10 team. LSU was a top 25 team. It is a lot easier for a new coach to improve Rice.

So far they have raised around $350 of their $12 million goal.

To be fair, the real drive is probably going on behind the scenes.

The buyout makes sense if and only if LSU determines that potential revenue and standing losses attributable to Orgeron could likely equal or exceed the buyout when monetized.

In LSU's case, the losses might well exceed $12 million.

Considering that Oregon has a multi-year deal, quite possibly so.

It would be a much clearer argument to fire Bailiff if it were clear that losses attributable to his continuing would exceed his much smaller buyout. But Rice athletics, and Rice football, generate such minimal revenues that the case is hard to make.

LSU's remaining schedule:

at Florida
AUBURN
at Mississippi
OFF
at Alabama
ARKANSAS
at Tennessee
TEXAS A&M

Those games against Arkansas, Tennessee, and Texas A&M could all have coaching implications on both sidelines. Mississippi is virtually certain to hire a permanent coach after this season.

RE: C-USA Football Coaching Changes
Andy Staples makes an interesting point in his Monday morning column this week. He's talking in terms of what Tennessee should do with Butch Jones, but he then makes this point (Currie is Tennessee's AD):

Quote:What makes this situation even more complex for Currie and the other ADs considering changing coaches this year is the institution of an early signing period in football. The ability to sign high schoolers to national letters of intent in December adds an entirely new dynamic to the annual coaching hire-fire cycle. Will schools fire coaches earlier to get their ducks in a row to make a hire and have the new coach recruiting the Sunday after Thanksgiving with two weeks to secure a class? Or will schools wait to fire their coaches when as little time as possible can elapse between the announcement that the old coach is fired and the announcement that the new coach is hired?
source: https://www.si.com/college-football/2017...e-hot-seat

While I'm not sure Rice needs to worry too much about poaching, it's an interesting point about how the early signing period is going to affect how long a team waits (or not) too make a new hire.

So if we were to fire Bailiff now, would we hire someone now? Who would be available? I presume that anyone we would want would be currently working and not available. A retread wouldn't go over very well. Would any of the current assistants make us happy if they were promoted?

OK, I'm fine with that but a little puzzled. Haven't we been complaining about the defense here?

Maybe this is just me remembering the most recent post I've read, but I've been under the impression that we've complained less about the defense as compared to the offense (although we've certainly complained about every aspect of this team). Still, the only initial positive for me about Bailiff getting fired midseason is the fact that Bailiff would finally be gone. A 50+ year-old coach who hasn't been a head coach at any level isn't exactly my pick for a full-time coach, however.

Rice D ranking: 92
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/c...team/22/p2

Rice O ranking: 120
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/c...team/21/p3

And yet the talent level on both sides, I'm assuming, is about equal.

Bama fans are happy. A Baton Rouge area 4star recruit committed to LSU two years ago. Bama covets him. After the debacle last weekend, he decommitted.

Interesting. On the LSU message board, the folks are having a discussion about their head coach, offensive coordinator and AD similar to ours. Many fear that LSU cannot afford another buyout.
