We, Americans, have never been civil.

It's a good article. I would add a 7th. Don't put stereotypical labels on anyone, especially political stereotypical labels.

This is all fine and good, but it's not possible with what we call a media.

Nope - hyperbole and name calling have become the media's go-to for clicks and views. They've almost become like carnival barkers, "Come and see the lobster boy!!!"......"he's a conservative/liberal piece of crap!!"

I would think that not shouting at people and blocking their way to work would be a good start.

I would say that the end of civility began with the internet, and its death blow was the birth of social media.

That's not to say we were all civil before that. It is just that uncivil behavior became a socially accepted norm after.

The media? What about the President? The man never misses an opportunity to make every event into an us verses them thing.

This guy doesn't care about the damage he is doing as long as everyone is talking about him.

RE: Make America Civil Again
I believe the vast majority of Americans do this every day - whether the realize it or not. The problem, as Nomad said, is the media. Harmony doesn't sell advertising slots, doesn't garner more click-throughs, doesn't get viewers to tune in. My little piece of America is as civil as it has ever been in my life. It's the 'outside' views, the fringe elements that get the most attention. The media no longer presents a 'big picture' view of America nor do they have the ability to remain neutral and merely report the news without injecting their own agenda. It's a sad state of affairs that extends beyond news networks into movies, entertainment, and politics.

RE: Make America Civil Again
I would posit that most of America is perfectly civil to each other. I know my neighbors, talk to the parents at lacrosse and gymnastics, have friends over for dinner and drinks, etc etc. I can count on one hand the number of political comments we make at each other.

One hand.

I have found that disconnecting from media on weekends is helpful. I recently wired up my house with speakers and now we rock some tunes instead of TV. Facebook is used mostly by my wife to post kid pics, and I use it to follow-up on family and a few friends and long ago blocked the more vocal political imbeciles.

And I think most Americans are exactly like me in the above regards.

So don't lose hope.

RE: Make America Civil Again
I too watch very little news during the weekends. However, I did hear something about the President leveling 18 negative tweets toward the mayor of San Juan in Puerto Rico.

I found this out when looking through my Facebook account.

It's absolutely demoralizing how the President continues to talk about people of color as "Those people".

Apparently, he said that "those people" want everything done for them. Seemingly implying that Hispanics are lazy.

Absolutely Shameful.

You seem completely unaware of how people from New York and New Jersey speak. He isn't saying "brown people want everything done for them", he's saying "those people" (in Puerto Rico where the destruction occurred).

It's a pretty commonly used adjective.

I won't deny that people in New York probably talk like that.

Around these parts however, whenever the phrase "those people" is used, it's usually a phrase meant for minorities.

Or in your case, white people.

I won't dispute that, but do you think Trump is more likely using the phase as someone from El Paso would, or someone from New York would.

Probably just his NY state of mind. Someone should advise him however how some people perceive a phrase like that.

Someone should advise you on what "you people" means. But I get the impression you already know and will do it anyway.
