My how we have fallen. Now losing to the likes of Liberty. Another example of how far our top women's sports have fallen.

ODU is not likely to ever have another Field Hockey coach of the caliber of Beth Anders. She was very special.
I remember another coach (I think it was the UNC coach) about 10 - 15 years ago making some comment like ... "She can take her players and beat your players, or take your players and beat her players".
That's pretty high praise coming from an opposing coach. I agree that it is very disappointing how far the Field Hockey team and the Lady Monarch's Basketball team have fallen. I can understand there being some decline over the years especially after losing their long time successful coaches, but the depth of how far they have fallen is unacceptable to the long time fans of both sports. With the proximity of the school to the Hampton Roads recruits for both sports, and the stellar reputation of their past success to tout, there is no reason ODU should have fallen behind the likes of JMU, W&M, Liberty, etc.

I would say that in WBB & FH in that era, his hires were spot on. However, I wouldn't say that JJ's overall hires in other sports were mind blowing.

Jim Jarrett had so many bad hires that you could barely count them on two hands. Clearly Anders and Wendy Larry were great, though I still have no idea what happened to Larry in her last 5 years.

RE: Women's Field Hockey
It was always neat during the Anders era to see ODU routinely beat the likes of UNC, Duke, go the Final Fours, etc., even though it was in a sport that had little fan interest. I went to a few of the games in Chapel Hill when we beat UNC. I expected perhaps a bit of drop off when she retired, but not to this level. I know next to nothing about the ins and out of field hockey, but there seems to be a theme in the coach's remarks after losses-making excuses-and that can never be good.

One of my former students plays field hockey for ODU. She played every game as a freshman. She had season-ending surgery this summer. Hoping she is up and running soon. She brings some size and aggressiveness ODU needs.
