I'm still in shock that nothing has happened regarding the apparent Pell Grant fraud, the Learning Disability fraud scheme (run by Fats Thomas whose girlfriend falsely certified dozens of athletes as LD), or the program pumping ADD pills into its athletes as performance enhancers. All of this probably sounds ridiculous, but there is documentation of all of it.
The academic scandal was only partially unveiled by the NCAA (UNC managed to cover much of it up), but that was just the tip of the iceberg. The entire UNC AD is a complete sham, as are all of their "successes".
They deserve the death penalty for the academic scandal alone (and please keep in mind, they no longer deny any of it - instead they are trying to weasel out of it via technicality), but they definitely deserve it as a penalty for all the other crap they did.
And after they finally get their comeuppance, we can start targeting all of Bama's players driving $100k BMWs.
Fake classes? Those classes were scheduled by the University, had a syllabus, met regularly, were taught by the Dean of the Department and required a term paper. The only thing irregular was that the papers were graded by the Dean's secretary instead of a TA.
Keep trying.
Everything first claimed by Mary Willingham has been debunked.
7 investigations and nothing.
The only thing that Carolina will get from the NCAA is an apology.
You're out of your ******* mind. Just how deep in the sand can UNC CHeats fanbase collectively shove their heads?
Bad news for you, the NCAA dropped a 3rd notice of allegations, reinstating the specific allegations against football and men's basketball, and the COI said it was sick of your stalling tactics. FIVE LEVEL ONE INFRACTIONS. They are meeting in a few months, and your program will be sanctioned. Heavily. Get the lube out buddy.

That's from your own student newspaper *******.
I like that you read the Daily Tar Heel; keep up the support!
Cute reply. Now tell me how UNC Chapel Hill does not deserve the death penalty?? The NC state legislature would have shut down any other state university athletic department that participated in this fraud. The NCAA wouldn't even have had to worry about it. I still feel that karma is a B&*$#@ and UNC-CH will get it at some point.
Interesting that you bring up politics. It was Jim Hunt (NC State grad) that elevated AFAM to full department status in 1993 from a minor course of study in the History Department.

The phrase you're looking for regarding the bold text is "lack of institutional control." The fraud went all the way to the very top. Out here in reality, that's considered a bad thing.

It wasn't a "lack" of Institutional Control, they had full control of it and, from the top on down, were/are complicit with it.

Even if only about 100 college basketball programs are relevant to NBA player development, that is still 100 rosters of players, 100 coaching staffs, 100 sets of arenas and practice facilities being used, etc.
If the NBA set out to do replace the player-develpment benefits they get from college basketball, they would need at least two levels of minor-league pro hoops, with 30 teams at each level, two farm teams for each NBA franchise. As with minor league baseball (or minor league hockey) you have to have a very large pool of players in the minors to properly develop and select the much smaller number of players who will eventually make "major league" rosters. And, you have to invest a ton of money because there are both start-up costs for each minor-league franchise plus operating losses that will have to be paid for every year. You could save on costs by having only 30 minor league cities, each with a "AAA" and "AA" farm team sharing practice facilities, arena, and team infrastructure (training staff, front office, marketing). But that would still require an enormously greater investment than the NBA is making in the G-League.

If there were significant penalties being handed down, I doubt they would have released its findings on a Friday afternoon (news dump). It would have been earlier in the week in order to get ahead of it.

On the contrary, it could be them trying to get ahead of the FBI case (clear the table to focus on it), and could also be to minimize the reaction to sanctions. Every single reporter "leaking" the release is referring to multiple penalties:

“Due to scheduling circumstances, there will be no release tomorrow regarding the NCAA Committee on Infractions decision. We have not yet received the Committee’s public infractions report. We anticipate we will be informed 24 hours prior to the actual release at a later date.”

Let's face it: If the Death Penalty still exists as a viable NCAA penalty, and to my knowledge it is still on the books, UNC deserves it for football and basketball.
Yet we all know there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of either happening. That's pretty screwed up.

This is roughly the NCAA's equivalent of Too Big to Fail.
There's no way in hell that the NCAA is going to give the death penalty to one of their Blue Blood basketball programs. Not a chance.
Just like the way they didn't give the death penalty to one of their Blue Blood football programs in Penn State.
The UNC & PSU's of the world will always find cover. They'll take out their outrage on schools like Baylor to compensate.

Tomorrow the NACC is expected to come down hard on UNC! It appears UNC will not be allowed to play games on a Tuesday for two years.

Nothing will happen. BTW, this is why it's worth it for Louisville to cheat - if you're big enough, you're beyond reproach for your actions. The people who sign checks will call the NCAA and tell them to back off... ...or else.
It's actually a recurring theme in our society. If you're talented, rich, influential, popular, or genius you get away with things. The rules apply to a certain point - and then they are either worked around or they disappear.

This one will be watershed. UNC is holding the NCAA to the letter with procedure, and I get the impression the "we anticipate 24 hours" thing as another component of that.
UNC had big campus events planned today, and the NCAA wasn't going to pull one of its justice "mic drops" to the school when it was kicking off a campaign drive. UNC would have been pissed...problem is, it's not like UNC is going to let up on this at all.
Even if the NCAA does anything significant, UNC is going to fight it. The least the NCAA could do is get a shot in there and pee on their parade a bit...letting them enjoy today is just another chapter in UNC owning the NCAA.

RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
Supposedly from UNC premium board:
Quote:spoke with a very high ranking admin this weekend. Here's the facts I was told:
1. Folt personally intervened/begged with the NCAA to push the announcement away from Friday due to the kick off of the capital campaign.
2. Expect the report on Tuesday.
3. Nobody really knows what's coming. Or if they do it is limited to only the top 3 folks (Folt, Blouin, Cunningham).
4. There's resolve within South Building to fight any unduly harsh penalties but it is not limitless. If the penalties are not too onerous we will likely just accept them

RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
From the linked article. UNC is not only fighting the penalties, it harassed the whistle blower and fought disclosure all the way. It makes Penn St. look compliant.
"...The university that for so long had talked about the “Carolina Way” — which included competing in sports with honor and integrity — discovered it was, in large part, a self-serving myth.
With its reputation in tatters, the school should have acted swiftly and sternly to punish its sports teams and coaches. Its refusal to do so means the NCAA is the only remaining hope of making UNC pay the price for nearly 20 years of wrongdoing."

RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
This is why UNC should get the severest penalties possible (death penalty is probably off the table). Take back all the national titles and conference titles since 1993. 4 years with no postseason in football or basketball. Let all the athletes transfer.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/17/us/north-c...index.html
"The University of North Carolina will pay whistleblower Mary Willingham $335,000 to settle her lawsuit with the university, following the largest academic fraud scandal in NCAA history.
Willingham is the former athletics literacy counselor who blew the whistle about the fake classes that went on for nearly 20 years at the prestigious university.
Willingham spent years fielding attacks from university officials -- including accusations that she was lying when she said that officials within the athletic department steered underprepared athletes into the fake classes to keep them eligible.
For nearly five years, UNC denied those claims, but Willingham refused to keep quiet. She first told her story to the News & Observer in Raleigh, and then to national media when the university refused to admit that the classes were well-known to faculty.
The added attention forced UNC to hire a new investigator and launch a new probe in 2014. That latest review, led by Ken Wainstein, a 19-year veteran of the U.S. Justice Department, found exactly what Willingham had always claimed -- widespread and systematic cheating."
