So the ports had to be cleared before Trump could waive the Jones Act?

Puerto Rico needs to become an independent island nation. I'm tired of having them linked to us. Same for the Virgin Islands. This has nothing to do with the hurricane(s). The U.S. should focus on the 50 states, period.

One would assume so. If goods are flowing into the ports and the ports are not operational, that could pose a problem. In short, none of us in here have an answer that will satisfy someone looking to pin more garbage on Trump.

Why do you feel this way? What is it about Puerto Rico? Is it an issue of taxes?

They're a net drain on the USA.

RE: Why did Trump wait almost two weeks to lift the Jones Act?
Yes, the reason was due to the ports. There is no point in lifting the Jones Act if the ports can't be opened. That doesn't mean PR and the USVI weren't getting outside relief by air. It just meant non-US vessels were not authorized to bring in their relief without going through the US barge system temporarily put in place by US vessels.

This whole Jones Act thing was just a poorly drummed up route for Dems to launch anything they could at Trump. Mostly, because US gov't efforts have been roundly successful throughout this hurricane season both in the continental U.S. and the islands. Devastation is devastation. No U.S. President could matching waive their fingers around and fix the devastation of this magnitude in days. You're talking about islands that took direct hits from some of the strongest storms we've seen in several years back to back in less than a couple weeks. That's nearly insurmountable in terms of preparation and relief efforts.

I have close friends both on the islands (and their families) and working relief efforts from the air and sea. The idea that the gov't isn't doing all they can because "Trump doesn't like brown people" couldn't be further from the truth, and honestly... is quite insulting to those of us working on this everyday.

A net drain? Puerto Rican people contribute in American society in many ways. Baseball would have to practically shut down if it wasn't for Puerto Ricans.

What about the music industry?

Military?

You realize Puerto Rico doesn't HAVE to be a U.S. territory for those players to play in the MLB, right?

Yeah but doesn't it help if you want to be in the military?

Little known secret, you don't have to be a U.S. citizen to be in the military. I know quite a few who aren't. They're not allowed to carry a firearm though, which kinda (excluding many jobs in the CG) makes the point of joining moot.

Perhaps not but how many people would join if they weren't American citizens?

Wouldn't Puerto Rico have to then form their own military? Wouldn't we have to protect them anyway?

NET drain.

I think MLB would survive without the 24 Puerto Rican players.

Your reach on on the music industry is even more ridiculous than saying MLB would shut down without Puerto Rican players.

Puerto Rico's contribution to the military is far greater than MLB or musicians, but still not a valid argument against them becoming fully independent.
