US Defense Department paid 14 NFL teams $5.4M to honor soldiers
According to a report from Christopher Baxter and Jonathan Salant of NJ.com, the Department of Defense has paid 14 different NFL teams a total of $5.4 million over the last four years in exchange for patriotic displays at games.
Per NJ.com's report, "U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz) last week called out the New Jersey Army National Guard for the spending, which, in part, paid for a segment at Jets home games in which soldiers were featured on the big screen, thanked for their service and given tickets to the game."

It's all for show and dough.

I thought the NFL paid that money back after Flake's report.

Yeah so what, that is chump change. DOD is allowed to advertise. The Military has always bought TV commercial air time for recruiting also.

I don't think it's the point. A lot of this current age of patriotism is manufactured. Manufactured to the point where we've forgotten that some of the practices are very recent.

Many of those "military appreciation" games in the nfl, nhl and other sports are sponsored by the military as a recruiting tool.

USA has been it doing decades before I was born. It isn't new. If they want to do it in NFL stadiums so what? The NFL likes it because they know most of the people in the Stadium are patriotic. You have never seen WWll posters, war bonds, or TV clips of USA military victories?

It is better than grabbing Irish Catholics off of the boat and forcing them to die in a Civil War they had nothing to do with.

This money couldn't be used for a better cause like health care or disaster relief?

Manufactured patriotism versus manufactured outrage.

I would prefer they get the $200B+ per year in Health Care fraud (Medicaid, Medicare, +) and waste under control.

Medicade, Medicare, a gazillion different welfare programs USA FEMA all over disaster areas. No Military = No Country. It is the most important government recruiting program under the sun.
