I had Dr. Robert Curl for physical chemistry in my first semester at Rice. Dr. Curl later won a Nobel Prize in 1996 for his work in nanotechnology. That is still an amazing statement - I sat in a class of about 40 (many pre-med students) that was taught be a future Nobel Prize winner.

Perhaps? I hate it when SMU rides Rice's academic coattails just because SMU is another private school in a large Texas city.

Not if you're trying to educate a populace of 2.7 million people plus half of Broward (another two million souls). FIU has like 20 or more colleges within the university; some of those colleges might give Rice a run for their money but we're also educating future elementary school teachers, nurses and law enforcement professionals.

clt says rice is an anomaly. Tons of small private schools in NC with ok academics.

Charlotte is growing but increasing quality of students and adding research dollars. Where is the problem?

The point is our admissions standards and quality of programs have improved while we are growing the fastest university in the state. Not quite sure how that is a bad thing.

It's awesome. If you can improve the quality of the students/alums and increase the number of alums being produced every year, you've got a major win on your hands.

Agree with this sentiment. No one else in my family went to Rice. Most went to Sam Houston State to go into teaching and law enforcement. Not every school should aspire to the same things.

I have never understood why someone would pay enormous tuition at even the finest of colleges to become a teacher. For that matter, I'm not sure even the Ivy League Nursing schools make much sense either. Unless there are scholarship opportunities or you want to get a PhD in Nursing and teach at a university.

And we are within 500 students of becoming the second largest school in NC by eclipsing UNC-CHeat, so hell yeah I want more students.

Maybe UNCC can become the next Miami-Dade College

Quote:1. Miami Dade College: Miami, FL

Enrollment: 174,000

Cost: $82.78 per credit hour for residents, $331.11 per credit hour for out-of-state students

Best Program: Education isn’t just the biggest department at Miami Dade College. It’s also the best. With over eight different areas of concentration, the education program prepares students for any education-related position they wish to enter. Majors can focus on a specific age, or even learn the skills necessary for educational administrative positions.

Fun Fact: The College manages the annual Miami International Film Festival.
Quick Facts

The first community college established in the U.S. was Joliet Junior College in Illinois.

Community colleges don’t always go by the same name. Some states refer to their schools as city, county, or junior colleges.

All American community colleges offer open enrollment. This means anyone with a high school diploma or GED can enroll.

clt will explain this simply and slowly for you.

lots of students want to go to Charlotte
Many more than we can admit
the school is adding more capacity for the demand
Due to the demand, it becomes harder to get in each year
So we are GROWING, yet adding BETTER students each year.

Not just engineering, physics and chemistry, Rice currently ranks nationally #6 in Psychology, #15 in Economics and #18 in Poly Sci.

It's pretty obvious they don't teach reading comprehension skills at La Tech.
