Coach Tiller's hiring got a big "who?" both in W. Lafayette and in Toledo. He was an offensive innovator as Asst Coach but I think really only had one good season as a head coach? A reason he gave for retiring, he felt the modern players "took days off," playing more for NFL money than team. Maybe a bit cynical but probably some truth too.
His win total at Purdue passed another with Toledo and NW Ohio connections: Jack Mollenkopf.

RIP Coach Tiller. Thanks for the post. I didn't realize that moved back to Wyoming when he retired. Incidentally, don't know how many remember but his first game as Purdue's head coach was a loss at the Glass Bowl in 1997. That was also the first college game appearance for Drew Brees who came into the game sometime in the second half for the starter after Purdue fell pretty far behind and gave them a bit of a spark.

and beat ND in his second game. UToledo > ND, time for them to stop dodging.

"Tiller was quoted -- and credited -- for bringing "basketball on grass" to the Big Ten. So much of what we see in spread offenses today was because of his systems and sport-wide influence. His brand of high-flying offenses worked in West Lafayette, Indiana, where he went 87-62 in 12 seasons. Tiller won eight or more games in six of those seasons. Prior to Tiller's arrival, Purdue had played in just five bowl games and won just 54 games in the previous 15 years." -CBS Sports

The confusion is on me. "only had one good season as a head coach," I was referring to head coaching before being hired at Purdue.
