RE: Triumphant Return
Wow. The coach lives in Miami and thinks "Mano e Mano" (sic) means "man to man". Stick with English, Coach.

There's a lot more Georgia in him than Miami at this point. He's really a RC Cola and a Moon Pie guy.

So English might not be a strong suit either?

There are 2.6 million people in Brooklyn that think they speak English.

I've met a few. I think they think everyone else speaks bad Brooklynese.
If everything had to be a direct translation for communication to transpire, we couldn't. It's a common and trivial mistake, "mano e mano," directly translating to "man to man," but the phrase does IMO cognitively translate to the same meaning. "Man to man" is used to describe a direct competition. Hand to hand is a direct competition. Mana e mano.
Though their LB was a bit in la-la land if he thought Toledo would compare beating Miami to "shocking the world," they won and the coach was complimentary so I wouldn't disparage. Compliments, moving on.
Quote:Current Spanish usage describes any kind of competition between two people where they both compete trying to outdo each other.
It is commonly misunderstood as a cognate by English speakers who think that the term means "man to man"

Except that in football context "man-to-man" means something very different and the phrase is "Mano A mano" (that one is on the writer) .

RE: Triumphant Return
Except it doesn't. I believe that's what is referred to as a "false dichotomy,' but more practically, it looks pretty small to bring up such a trivial thing, a common thing as if it somehow diminishes someone that just kicked our azz, and was gracious at it. So if someone wants to have a pissing contest, "man to man" has several connotations within most competitions, including football. As well "mano e mano," isn't reserved for arm wrestling. While it doesn't transcribe literally word for word, it has the NORMAL (not esoteric) use to describe a directly held "man to man" contest or confrontation. It may even be used to refer to a long distance message board confrontation, I don't know.
But to each their own.
