The real answer is that rather than change games to be away, athletes were released to be with their families.
Thank you, that's what I was curious about. I didn't know if schools in Florida send them home in situations like this or just make them stay at school.
UCF's campus was closed to students from Thursday, September 7 through Friday, September 15. The campus does encourage students to leave if at all possible. However, students who have no place to go are moved to a secure building and basically camp out until the storm passes.
The storm largely affected Orlando on Sunday the 11th and Monday the 12th, but the whole region was out of commission for at least a week after that. Stores closed, traffic lights and power out everywhere.
There was also a curfew in Orange County from Sunday the 10th until Monday the 12th at 6:00 p.m. so no one could go anywhere. Once the Memphis game was cancelled on Friday the 8th, the football coaches couldn't really keep the players here seeing that the game was cancelled due to state emergency.
Seeing that the earliest the team could return to campus would be Tuesday the 12th (more likely not until Wednesday because gas was limited and interstates packed) there wasn't enough time to practice. About two thirds of our football team stayed on campus, but the remaining third left and some did not get back until Thursday the 14th.
If the GT game was moved to Atlanta, that would have been one day less of practice in order to travel. Also add on the fact that the athletic facilities were hosting the National Guard and you get the game cancellations.
