If things get delayed just long enough, maybe UAB will be able to build up enough financial and political clout to get an actual oncampus stadium.

Sounds like a guy who thinks he's smarter than everyone else. This could end badly for everyone. Seen this movie before.

This is the thing that disturbs me the most

I'm with you. Businesses aren't just stuck in Birmingham with nowhere to go.

My favorite part is when he said the idea of working with the City Council is "whack", that's definitely the kind of sophistication you want from a leader responsible for managing the public services of thousands of people. Of course, the writers at Al.com who think he's darling thought it was the cutest and funniest thing ever

Did you read the same thing I did?

He said only pandering to get a 5-person majority in the City Council is "whack"...and that the mayor should be listening to every city council member and working with all of them.
I don't even particularly care for the guy, but at least know what you are talking about when you misquote somebody.

The actual thing you are talking about:
Quote:Woodfin spoke Birmingham heresy when he challenged the long-held notion that a mayor must learn to "count to five," or carve out his majority of support on the nine-member council.

"That style is dead. It's whack," he said, in the most authentic if not the first use of the term whack in mayoral communication. He said he would deal with council members "individually and collectively," because the only people suffering from mayor/council barriers are residents.

I think he was referring to the style of pretty much all the mayors since the district system came in: forge an alliance with five members, they vote in a bloc and tell the other four to go **** themselves. That's how you end up with fistfights in the conference room.

I suspect he's about to find out why they did it that way.

I think he was referencing not the substance of what was said, but the use of the word "whack." Hence the comment about sophistication. And I tend to agree with TPBlaze. You're the mayor now- how about speaking with a little more sophistication. I know the millennials think its cool and hip to talk about something being whack or dope or on fleek or whatever the hell kids are saying now, but maybe try to sound like you know what you're talking about.

I know what he was getting at, but he also completely misquoted him in the process.

I don't want to get too political in this forum, but are we really getting up in arms about a city mayor using a slang term from the early 90's when the highest office of our country has become a laughing stock?

Man...this country really has gone down the drain.

Presidents who want to get their programs through Congress "learn to count to 51 for the Senate or 218 for the House. EVERY chief executive at ANY level must be able to "work the existing system" to get objectives accomplished. Those who count poorly get blamed by voters who supported them for their failures to keep their promises.

Yeah, when he starts losing votes 8-1 or 7-2, he'll find out how 'whack' building coalitions is

Everything I hear and read about him just screams overly idealistic and naive. His term is going to devastate the commercial base of Birmingham (hint, Randall, businesses pay the taxes. you do kind of have to suck up to them to have money to spend in the neighborhoods) and shift all of the power to the council

Back in 1962 when the election to change B'ham from the City Commission form to a mayor-council form was selected, the form adopted was described as "weak mayor - strong council" rather than "strong mayor - weak council". As with the national government's "separation of powers", since then there has always been a battle of wills between the two branches for domination. It is the nature of the divided system.
