Thats a nice stat, now tell me what the sb record is for a top 5 defense playing a top 5 offense. The Defense like pavement vs motorcycle rider is undefeated. It gets ugly for the number 1 defense vs number 1 offense in the superbowl.
And hood rich, your right, the object is to score more points, but if you never score and i get a safety because my team is so dominate, guess what? 2-0 i win. If the other team can't score they can never win. Great defense means championships.
2016, NE was top 5 in off and def scoring.
2015, Carolina was top 5 in both. Denver top 5 defense
2014, NE was the number 1 offense; Seattle the number 1 defense. NE WIN!
2013, Seattle number 1 defense(8th offense); Denver number 1 Offense. SEA WIN!!!
2012, Both Baltimore and SF were top 5 defenses
2011, The Giants were neither(7th in offense/ 17th Defense) and won.
2010, Both GB(7th offense) and Pit were top 5 Defenses
2009, NO was the number 1 offense. Indy was not top 5 offense or defense.
2008, Pitt was top 5 defense; AZ top 5 offense, PITT Wins.
2007, NYG was neither(14th in both....how did they win that year)
So in 10 years they've faced off three times and defenses are 2-1. So 2 out of 10 times a top 5 defense beat a top 5 offense without also being a top 5 offense themselves.
Sound like a small sample set with a ton of statistical noise. My original stat is better. Be really good at one side of the ball and not a trainwreck on the other side and you have a good chance. Or be the New York Giants.
