So sad I cannot be in H'burg this weekend to honor the memory of the man who made JMU everything I love. I hope he will be remembered in someway at homecoming since so many Alum will not be in town for Parent's weekend. Thank you Uncle Ron. My Dad always thought so much of you. 'Hope you are both enjoying a beer in heaven and talking college sports!

Uncle Ron handed me my diploma on the Quad in 1987. I didn't know him well, but feel blessed to have met him.

JMU just put out a short remembrance video and expressed that the family wants donations to go to the arboretum. If everyone who donates, gives to the arboretum...it's about to become a world class arboretum...

I graduated in Dec 1984, the last December graduation without an actual graduation. We had a small reception in the Convo? Anyway, Dr Carrier shows up a little late with swollen cheeks, talking a little funny and apologizes to everyone explaining he had dental surgery earlier in the day. He was in obvious pain, but still gave a great short speech and made a point of talking to all of us after. I remember feeling like he was family intent on making our graduation regardless of how he felt. It was special. My Dad said later, he had joked with him that the pain pills and a glass of bourbon had helped him make it! I think we need an Uncle Ron statue on the quad.

Mine as well, same year. Let's retire the football jersey #4. Uncle Ron founded and adored the program. He is our 4th president, and a legendary & beloved one at that. James Madison was the 4th POTUS. Seems fitting.

Like what you're thinking, but I actually think 4 is already retired for Scott Norwood.

Retiring Norwood's #4 must have been a fairly recent thing. Rhad Miles wore #4 when I played (93-97). I like the idea though. Saxkow might have the solution.

So what could be awesome, though possibly dangerous depending on the location, would be a lifesize statue of him on the sideline/endzone of him sitting in his lawn chair like in the famous photo of him from the first football game. Maybe we could put it on the porch of the APC so he'll always be there watching the games. If it's over in the corner I think it would be visible enough, but not in the way of players. Not saying he shouldn't have a statue elsewhere, but I feel like it would be very appropriate to have one of him in the stadium.

I think that's a great idea and will forever be a talking point for televised games. However, two additional thoughts.

1) Dean Ehlers needs to also be there sitting next to him. It would make it that much better.
2) Wouldn't it be a better idea to put it in the approximate location on Godwin field, or along the side of it? I bet it's in the middle of someone's parking spot.

Alabama has a statue for each of its National Championship coaches. We'd have to have one for MM and one for MH.

Agreed, the man responsible for having a team, and each coach that led teams to a NCAA championship.

Yep, need 3 more statues right now. The biggest one should be Carrier. Flanking him could be ones for MCM and MH.

RE: Dr. Ronald Carrier 1932-2017
I was at an informal reception at Uncle Ron's house back in the mid-80s. As he did with everyone, he took the time to spend a few quality minutes in conversation with me. He learned I was from NJ and he would be traveling up to NJ the following week. In turn he asked for my parents home phone number so I gave him the number on a napkin. Lo and behold he brought that napkin with him on his trip and called my parents and of course said glowing things about me to them. That's the kind of man he was. Rest In Peace and God Bless Uncle Ron!

I'm really bummed I never met Uncle Ron or got to have even a brief 2-5 minute conversation with him. He sounds hysterical.
