I am excited about the upcoming season. There are some key new players, so it may take a little while for the team to gel, but when they do they have a lot of upside. I am excited to see Caver and Green's progress, but the two newcomers in Godwin and Hueitt are going to be something else. I think Brandan Stith and Porter will have a great season with what should be a much improved perimeter team.

I'm excited to see the newcomers, but have lower expectations for the coming season in terms of post season possibilities (the only thing that matters now.) We'll see how it unfolds.

I feel much better about this year than last year. This year should be far more talented, but some of the contributions may have to come from younger players.

Had a long talk with a former player at the last football game. He wasn't too pleased with our scheduling or our conference either. Said they both contribute to the hoops team not being able to position itself for an at large bid. We both agreed the team had to schedule stronger, and win.. and get out of this conference.

That'd be a good argument if a) ODU dominated the OOC schedule regularly and b) did better in-conference. They haven't, for the most part. Losing games to sub-200 RPI teams is what causes teams to not be in the at-large chase—and for good reason. Start being successful against the teams before you before you complain about the teams before you making it hard to be successful.

This is a self fulfilling prophecy. Position yourself among better programs and you are much more likely to reach level than by positioning yourself among lesser competition.

Yeah, but using that logic, the MEAC should be a multi-bid league because most of their teams play nothing BUT strong teams in the OOC. The best way to demonstrate that something is beneath you is by proving it where it matters — in this case, on the court. Is CUSA beneath ODU? Prove it by winning regular-season titles and NCAA bids. Is the OOC beneath ODU back? Beat the hell out of the teams you're already playing.

ODU isn't losing to William & Mary and UTSA because they're forced to play them. That's a crutch. That's like saying someone who flunked out of high school should be admitted to college because the high school courseload didn't challenge him.

Bingo. The best way to prove that you belong in a better conference is to win the one you're in.

Hell, were 0-7 against MTSU. They're a solid program, but they're not that damn good.

Huh? Your argument makes no sense. I said you will play to the level of the opponents you are surrounded by and you used the worst collection of teams in basketball as an example.

I doubt that. They aren't as good as the VCU teams that we used to beat on a regular basis. But you're welcome to do a poll.

They have been very good, but I don't think they have been so good that we should be 0 for life against them.

I agree, but their record shows that they are that damn good. Say what you want about Conference USA, but to completely dominate a conference like that, with that much travel...you have to be that damn good.

I agree. The travel part makes it very tough, but for some reason just about all the teams in the league fare pretty poorly in the OOC part of the season.

Kah has a back problem.

I'd say reading between the lines of Ed Miller's piece, we've got some major problems to overcome this season -- and I'm usually optimistic when it comes to ODU hoops.

This will be a real test of JJ's coaching ability and adaptability. I hope he's up to it, the staff, too.

RE: 2017 basketball
Any of you guys go to that Squires Documentary movie premier last night at the TCC Roper Theater ? It was awesome, and great to see DR. J there, he looks like a freaking Senator or something ! George Gervin and so many others. Charlie Scott was funny as heck.

The reason I bring it up, much of the movie was about the Squires and much of the ABA playing wide open, fast, small ball. Like Ex-Squire Coach Al Bianchi said last night, you know, like the NBA does now! So, I'm hopeful we might adopt our fair share of playing like this too, this coming season. We have some pieces we have been lacking for a while in Green, Heuwitt and Godwin. Not having some big's "could" end up being a blessing in disguise.

Not to mention caver being well suited for faster tempo IMO.
