RE: 2017 basketball
We've discussed Caver a number of times. Personally, I think he struggles in an up tempo system; others disagree......

I don't care what system they run as long as they win. I would be concerned about front court depth in terms of playing at an up tempo pace. And Caver has to play 35+ mins.

Im not as concerned about tempo as I am the efficiency of the shots. We have to find a way to shoot less 18 foot jumpers and more 3's and layups. Hopefully having more than 2-3 actual offensive players on the court helps that.

Yeah, it'll be great to potentially play 5v5 on the offensive end of the floor this year, and opposed to our typical 3v5.

Two statements from that article struck me as odd when taken together.

"Welcome to Small Ball".

--- and ---

"We may at times have to play without a point guard".

I agree. That has been a problem all too often in recent years.

If we don't have reliable bigs on the floor, couldn't any team beat us by simply getting it to their big man under the basket and him laying it in? It seems like it would always be easier for the other team to score if we are playing small, where we would still need to rely on more difficult outside shots. I am not well versed in small ball.

The reality is that there are not very many teams, especially in CUSA, that have big men who are capable of dominating like that. You also aren't losing a ton of height if you put a guy like Godwin at the 4, if you look at Brandan and BJ standing next to each other, Brandan isn't much taller. As long as your guys are committed to rebounding, small ball won't usually get you killed around the basket.

RE: 2017 basketball
Its not height that is the concern, but you do need bodies that can defens and get rebounds. Brandon, for eample, has a freakish wingspan. Teams can get a way with “small ball” if they have a 4 that is versatile enough to play inside/out and rebound. (The name escapes me but the light skin guy from MTSU). Other teams that try it but dont have that “4” like Marshall get abused on defense.

Im not expecting a ton of small ball when two of our best playerd are Stith/Porter, but Indo expect some lineups with BJ or Godwin at the 4. College basketbal is moving toward positionless basketball as it is. But rebounding is still important.

RE: 2017 basketball
Stith and Porter give us a very solid front line, after that it's a question mark. MTSU had Reggie Upshaw who was a very versatile player and could play all over the floor. We don't have that player right now, think maybe one of the freshmen could develop into that guy. JJ has shown if needed he'll move a guard to SF, Marsharee Neely comes to mind. As a fan one of the most enjoyable parts, is watching the kids develop. A lot of new pieces this year should be fun,

Bazemore has a "freakish wingspan" too but he wasn't our center because you need some height at that position. A 6'-7" player like Brandan is at a big disadvantage inside against a 6-10", 6-11", or 7'-0" center.

The best teams have a balance of good inside post players and good outside shooters giving them an option every time down the floor of dumping it inside for a mismatch down low (say a 6'-11" center being defended by a 6'-7" player) who can then turn and shoot over the smaller player, or kick it out to the open spot up shooter on the perimeter when the much needed double team comes to defend the low post. Teams won't always have good shooting nights from the three point line, but game after game, a 6'-11 guy is always going to be 6'-11".

Good grief. Of course Bazemore was also under 200 pounds while Stith is 240ish. Im trying to remember all the 7 foot centers that have dominated him.

Saw pics. Glad people like it. I heard it ran into construction issues but I know the design team worked really hard to get as much out of the small space and budget as possible and everyone is pleased with how it turned out.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

You brought up his disadvantage and I asked for examples of when he was dominated by taller centers.

Brandan is a pretty elite defender. We will probably never see him get dominated by a guy at his position. He is too physical for that.

From what I am hearing and seeing, this should be an exciting squad to watch. Sure, we will be thin, but this team is going to be explosive if the coach lets them be explosive. We totally disagree about Caver. He is such a good player that he can play well in any system. I believe he will be better in the open floor. I guess we will see who is right.

I spoke to someone who really should know the other night and he said the team this year should be able to play faster and he thought they would score more. He said that Hueitt could really shoot and from very deep. He thought Godwin might struggle some. For what it's worth, he, also, said Louisville should "most definitely" get the death penalty.

Did he say (or do you or anyone else think) that Godwin may RS this season?
