If he is judging it as a whole when the D was pretty gassed at the end.. then sure I can see his point. Until then however the D was amazing. Hopefully the O can start clicking and run the table with the rest of the schedule. O doesn't need to be great.. just average. The D has been fantastic.

You are kidding right?

We held an otherwise prolific P5 offense to 17 points in the 1st half; with no offensive support whatsoever. VT only scored 21 more in the 2nd half. when our D was surely gassed due to lack of any offense at all.

Under those circumstances, the performance of the D vs a top tier ACC program was, IMHO, very impressive.

Completely realistic and logical analysis of the ODU defense. 78, you can't rationalize with the irrational.

I guess you are right if our defense is a bend don't break type. That may explain why they had 32 first downs, almost 600 yards and we held them to 3 and out 1 out of 13 times as we were giving them a cushion and then trying to protect the endzone, limiting them to field goals or making a mistake which unfortunately didn't happen. My bad. Sorry for being so irrational.

No one is claiming the defense played like the steel curtain. But, it is acceptable and even very good in the first half. But, when the offense cannot stay on the field, your defense just gets beat on and beat on. What would you expect vs. a more athletically gifted team?

Redskins-Raiders a perfect example of what happened to us Saturday.
Consider: Temps in DC were ion the 80s, even at 8:30 +. When Raiders defense was fresh, Washington couldn't run. But their offense couldn't stay on the field, the defense eventually (2nd half) tired, and Washington started running and eating clock and dominating.

Saturday at Lane Stadium, temps in the 90s, we're wearing dark uniforms, VT has the ball for VT 38:15, we can't move but once across the 50. Defense wears down, we're on the road against a more talented team. Defense wouldn't have been such a problem if the offense could have generated something. Having said that, someone on here posted last week that Cox is a load once he gets going, but he's slow to the hole and (I don't think) has the speed to turn the corner (hope I'm wrong come the CUSA season). I'm hoping one of our other RBs can fill the speed back role, but maybe that kid doesn't exist on this roster. And the line needs a major improvement. Listening to the Tech announcers, they were wowed with Williams, but made it sound like he was running for his life most of the time. But they were giving him props all day, and I guess you read where the first thing Fuente said to Wilder after the game was how good the QB is.

There is hope.

Interestingly, I remember seeing TOP when our defense was playing very well, and we were actually very close. By the end of the game, TOP was lopsided in VT's favor. If you track the TOP, it will show exactly what happened to the defense.

If you can't get first downs, especially against fast paced offenses like VT and UNC, you can forget about your defense shutting them down.

I'll also thrown out the fact that their first TD of the second half was pulled out of their anal cavity on a tip drill, and the second off of an interception (which of course was also off of an interception). Could have very well been 24 points (which would still have been more than enough to win.)

Not making excuses, but playmakers make plays, and we just don't have enough to compete with VT right now.
