RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
There are some FCS/P5 games that make sense. Any involving teams in the same state should happen. Some regional games make sense, off the top of my head Arkansas vs Missouri State, about 120 miles apart, local TV broadcasts overlap to some degree.

RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
I would like to drop the D1, D2 and D3 labels and NAIA as well. Have everybody compete under D1, and have a tier system. Tier 1 P5 type schools which includes some big name G5 schools. Tier 2, semi P5 conferences like AAC, MWC and MVFC. Tier 3, G5 type schools like SBC, MAC, C-USA, Big Sky, CAA, OVC, Southern Conference, Southland, Gulf South and Lone Star. Tier 4 be the rest of the FCS, plus top D2 conferences. Tier 5, the SWAC, MEAC and the rest of the smaller schools from D2 and NAIA. Tier 6 would be schools like the Ivy League, Pioneer League and D3 schools. Top 3 tiers cannot play tier 6 schools.

As for close by schools? Arkansas could even play Missouri Southern. Missouri Southern could have used the extra cash especially after that tornado that struck their town in Joplin, Missouri. Imagine how much money and donations the Arkansas fans could raise for the Missouri Southern team to take back to help the victims of the tornado that year?

RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
FBS and FCS will always play games with each other , so , maybe, try thinking of splitting FBS in half, now that's something to think about

Quote:P5 playing P5 and no other FBS or FCS is reasonable. If you allow P5 vs other FBS then FCS should be allowed to play also.

I don't think that's reasonable. FCS & G5 are totally separate groups. It's not P5 at the top of the mountain, and G5 & FCS at the bottom with the G5 just a few feet above FCS. That's completely ridiculous and completely inaccurate.

A P5 making the playoffs -- SoS comes into play. Sure, a 30pt win over a bad G5 or a random FCS is about the same. But so is a 30pt win over a bottom-feeder of a P5 conference for said Alabama-type team. SoS will play itself out. If your conference doesn't provide quite enough goods in a given year, notably with no playoff conference champ game (B12) -- yeah, skip an FCS team unless said FCS team you're banking on being in the Top 8 or something and winning some in the FCS playoffs as they do consecutive years or something (for it to be a 'solid win').

Overall, I would say that if you only have 3 OOC games and you're P5 -- and you're aiming to have playoff hopes -- sure, schedule a moderate G5 as your "easy win" on the level of a bottom team in your conference.... unless you're scheduling a last minute FCS team who's constantly and is aiming to be in the FCS playoffs (who again, is better than the bottom of your conference).

As far as an official rule's concerned -- the only thing I can think of is if it comes down to a virtual tie of the 4th playoff team -- the one with an FCS team who's not playoff bound themselves, OK, can be some official deciding factor to not awarded the slot. But beyond that, let the SoS altogether play itself out.

But my guess is -- in about 5-10 years, there's going to be more than 4 teams in the playoff. In around 10 years, my guess is that the whole BCS/NY bowl teams will be in a playoff, with the Top 4 existing now just having a bye week.

I don't know, Richmond has played 9 ACC games in the last 11 years and has gone 4-5. Granted Richmond has been an FCS power, but why shouldn't they play UVA, VaTech, UNC, NC State and Duke?

Currently the majority of G5 couldn't compete with the upper FCS schools. That includes 80% or more of the MAC schools. Heck, Bowling Green got their ass handed to them by a mid-tier MVFC school. An MVFC school that has never finished above .500 in league play. The reality is that if a P5 really wants SOS for the playoffs, they should be scheduling a top 10 FCS school. NDSU, SDSU, YSU, JMU.

A majority of the G5s not having a good season will often get beat by the Top FCS. A majority of G5s all around will lose to the Tippy Top FCS. But then again, a majority of P5s will lose to the Tippy Top of the G5. I think your POV is over the top on the FCS. BGSU sucks this year -- a low tier G5. And SDSU -- San Diego State -- is a Much better choice for SoS than anyone in the FCS.

RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
I'd prefer if all FBS v. FCS games were designated as exhibitions, like basketball games between D-I and D-II schools, but it's not going to happen. And like most everything else the reason is money.

To use the example mentioned a few posts above, Kentucky is probably going to make roughly the same ticket revenue for a home game v. FCS Eastern Kentucky as they do for a home game v. a G5 team like Western Kentucky, but they have to pay the G5 team about $1 million more. As long as that is the case, athletic directors will continue to put FCS teams on the schedule.

That and a virtually guaranteed win against an FCS like Eastern Kentucky, when you're a non-top P5 like Kentucky... but against Western Kentucky, there is an actual a potential loss worth noting + paying more $$. Going FCS is the safe route, unless you're scheduling a Top 4 or 5 team in the FCS. Then you mine as well be scheduling W Kentucky when they were good the last couple years with their good coach (who is now making Purdue great out of nowhere).

The CFP already takes scheduling into account.

This.

If P5 schools were banned from playing FCS schools, both the P5 and the FCS will lose money, so it ain't happening.

If the P5 stopped playing G5, the situation would be even worse.

No. The cost of money games has ballooned so much that playing G5 opponents is only highly profitable for the P5 schools that are at about 70,000 per game or more. If your AD makes you play home/home with a G5 team because money games cost too much, that means it would be more profitable to play home/home with an attractive P5 opponent because you can sell more tickets and charge a higher ticket price for your own home game. The reason P5 teams don't do that for every non-conference series is that the coaches don't want the non-conference schedule to be that difficult.

I propose that the New York Yankees be allowed to host a series against the Albuquerque Isotopes each year and count the wins towards their record and stats count for season awards.

An article in College AD recently noted that the first $3 million game guarantee could happen as early as 2022.

USA Today reported that this year game guarantees totaled $150 million in single shot game contracts.

There are six FBS programs that had revenue of more than that.

We have moved into a world where the 7th home game is less about ticket sales and more about the value of the booster club revenue from parking, premium seats (and suites), and marketing deals.

For the schools that cannot swing the price of two expensive buy games a year it doesn't make sense to go home and home with Houston or Boise State, do it with Tulane and San Jose State who are easier to beat.
