If we're to build Rice WBB into what it can be, Turner is the type of recruit that we'll eventually need to start landing. A 5-star guard from Texas who puts a clear emphasis on education. We're not going to land all of them, but we need to start hitting on some (this isn't a criticism at all...this is obviously only the first offseason after breaking the NCAA/ranking ice). A very good year would do wonders because I'm not sure we've gotten to the point where we can sell Rice over a Harvard/Princeton/Northwestern/etc, even with them being inferior basketball programs.
I don't know how high a target Turner was, but missing out on her and Samb would be a rough start to a two year recruiting period which really has to be strong. You can't just replace Ogwumike and Mulkey with a few diamonds in the rough. Maintaining a consistently top-25, or thereabouts, program is probably going to require us to nab some top 100 recruits. High level recruiting is vastly more important in WBB than MBB which is why there's so little parity.
While having a longer track record of winning undoubtedly will help, it will always be hard to trump a Harvard offer. The transfers were from good , but not Rice peer, institutions

Though we can't trump a Harvard offer based on academics alone, a Houston native with an opportunity to play for an elite D1 program in front of family and friends should prove to be more attractive to many.

The player in question is from Dallas.

Another year at this level will help and Coach Langley has shown that she can bring in quality transfers.

Looks like 2021 Trinity Gooden is visiting. She has a bunch of low level offers. No big programs as far as I can tell.

2021 guard Jordan Hobbs committed. Looks like she's 6-0 so def not a PG. Not rated anywhere and hard to tell if she had any offers.

Which Jordan Hobbs? Springboro HS?
ETA: Found it. Yes that's her. She has some highlight videos on Hudl. Not a point guard, but a 3-point shooter and a ball hawk.

Per Twitter, it looks like she had some interest from the likes of Minnesota, Illinois, Cincinnati, and a few other schools. Definitely fits the Langley guard mold (i.e. long, deep threat, defender).

Kyra Lambert (graduate student PG from Duke and Cibolo Steele HS originally) is in the transfer portal. She's a very good student so I'm sure Rice is going to make an effort to connect with her. Baylor and Texas are also in the mix obviously.
The women still have 1 scholarship to give out this year (not counting the mess on what happens with this past season's eligibility and seniors).

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Women's recruiting refresher (to my best knowledge):
Available Spots + Commits:
2020: 1 (Bokunewicz)
2021: 3 (Gooden, Hobbs)
2022: 7
Some Targets (Realistic or not and not exhaustive):
2021 - Kyndall Hunter (Houston, TX) (5*, #29)
2021 - Bre'yon White (Pearland, TX)
2022 - Kayla Cooper (Plano, TX)
2022 - Cammie McKinney (Carrollton, TX)
2022 - Carleigh Wenzel (San Antonio, TX) (4*, #43)
2022 - Jamia Harris (DeSoto, TX)
2022 - Raeven Boswell (Austin, TX)
The biggest issue over the last few years for Langey and Co? We're not landing the prized recruits. Texas targets, or potential targets, who have opted for other schools:
2019 - 10 Texas players ranked in top 100, no commits
2020 - #42 Harmoni Turner (Harvard)
2020 - #51 Fatou Samb (California)
2020 - 11 other Texas players in the top 100, no commits (obviously no way to know about academic qualifications)
2021 - #60 Jasmine Shavers (Released top 8 schools and Rice excluded...Northwestern on list)
2021 - 8 other Texas players (4 already committed)
Not sure what the solution is, but we're eventually going to need to land some more established players. We're already in the post-Ogwumike era, and we're soon to be in the post-Mulkey era. Not saying our current recruiting level can't keep us at the top of Conference USA, but there's a reason there's less parity in WBB and it's because high-ranked players are legit better.

Wasn't Smith a Top 100 recruit? And Langley has landed a number of Top 200 recruits. Let's be realistic.

Yes, Smith was top-100 in 2018 (or at least I thought she was...looks like she's no longer on ESPN's 2018 rankings). I'm talking about capitalizing on the successes of the last couple of years. These last two years have been about as good as you can hope for in terms of selling a smaller program. NCAA tournament, top 25 ranking, undefeated in conference play, Ogwumike gets drafted, etc. The goal is to parlay that into a few recruits that you might not have otherwise had a shot at. It hasn't worked out like that. It might still happen. Even if it doesn't, it's by no means the end of the world. But the hope is you reel in a few big fish when you're at an all-time high. It's the easiest way to build a consistent contender.

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread
We don't have a history of signing the top recruits out of high school (Marla Brumfield is about the only one I can think of from the last 30 years), but many of the top rated ones were transfers to Rice (and did quite well there). Odd because our support for women's basketball is pretty solid actually, and probably surpasses some of the other schools that local players end up going to. But it would be nice to get another high profile transfer. All of our golden eras in women's basketball had D1 transfers who were integral parts of our success.
