RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
not a single game cracks the top 10 this week. Clemson/Va Tech sits at #11 currently. This weekend should get a game in there- the Michigan/Michigan St game should get a good number for ABC.

Amazing the folks that said that Fox was going to do so much better than ABC/ESPN with the Big Ten. That's truly not been the case at all. I mean this past weekend I think Iowa/Michigan St was the #1 selection for Fox and it drew 2.52 million viewers. ABC got 2nd selection for the week and got Northwestern/Wisconsin. That game drew 2.844 million viewers. There's a VERY real chance that ABC/ESPN will outdraw for the season Fox/FS1- and by a considerable margin- for Big Ten games. Not what you expect when you spend 50 million dollars more.

Wow, FOX really loaded in this week. Did they really have no other properties doing anything today??

stever, the $50M more was basically to guarantee the Ohio St Michigan game and the CCG, if I recall correctly. I'd say that's worth roughly $50M. The rest will be a wash, more or less.

except the overall ratings with all the games give the advantage to ESPN. I mean right now there's 3 games in the overall top 10, and ESPN has all 3 of them. Tonight's Michigan/Michigan St game should crack the top 10 easily. Regular season ABC/ESPN will have many more viewers than Fox/FS1 did. The Ohio St/Michigan game is great, but ABC/ESPN will always get the best OOC game. And a lot of times, the gap between Ohio St/Michigan and 2nd game that weekend is less than the gap between the top OOC game and the 2nd best game that particular weekend.

Just a case in point. In 4 of the 5 weeks the top rated ABC/ESPN game has outdrawn the top rated Fox/FS1 game.... In those 5 games-
ABC/ESPN- 21.979 million viewers total
Fox/FS1- 9.921 million viewers total

so that's a 12 million viewer gap just there. And that gap is going to grow dramatically today when Fox shows Ohio St/Maryland while ABC gets Michigan/Michigan St. And while Fox does get a good Ohio St/Penn St game in a few weeks, ESPN gets a good Michigan/Penn St game as well. And that game will be in prime time, while Ohio St/Penn St won't be. All in all, ABC/ESPN will almost certainly have more viewers in the regular season.

*shrug* You're still somewhat cherry-picking your data to support your narrative.

The actual number is the end of the season, ALL games total viewership, including the CCG. Then you look at that and see if the $50M was worth it or not.

It's only a six year contract. Who knows who is going to re-up or not. Time will tell.

In the mean time, I'm not saying you're wrong. Just saying to be patient.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
The middle/bottom games have been almost equal. But the top tier games have been a huge advantage for ESPN/ABC.

And today is just a mismatch. The game going on right now- Northwestern/Penn St blows away the Maryland/Ohio St game. Meanwhile, Fox doesn't have an answer for the Michigan/Michigan St game.

Really the 50 million gap IMO is mostly for the CCG. Yes, they get the Michigan/Ohio St game always, but that benefit is mitigated by ABC/ESPN always getting the top OOC game. The regular season ratings aren't going to be a huge difference at all whatsoever.

saw the Michigan/Michigan St game drew a 3.9 overnight rating. If that finalizes, that'll put the game around 7 million viewers and in 4th place for the season. Not too bad for ABC given that this week would be at the best you would think the #6 pick best case in the weekly draft(if not #8).

I think everyone expects ABC to beat Fox on Big 10 games. Fox just hasn't developed a practice among the casual fans in looking their way for college football. They are thinking long term.

Realistically, Fox has traditionally been around ESPN's ratings, notably below ABC/CBS and FS1 has been below ESPN2. They want to get Fox close to ABC/CBS and FS1 close to ESPN. But it will take years, not weeks.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
unless Fox really improves their schedule, they aren't going to get close to either ABC or ESPN. I mean, ABC gets half of all the good games that Fox gets, PLUS all the ACC games. ESPN gets that, plus a lot of good SEC games. Fox really needs to get all of something, or clear 1st dibs of something. That's why Fox is struggling. Casual fans can find Fox- it's just Fox has to have something worth watching.

Also, Fox does stupid **** like what they're doing on Saturday.... No football on Big Fox. What are they airing? Baseball game 2 of ALCS at 4pm. Great... no issue with that at all... But also then a Nascar Truck Race and then at night Boxing. WTF? How can you get people used to watching you if the middle week of the college football season you have no football. Just a dumb as **** mistake. So how can casual fans find fox if they aren't showing football?

It's a crappy week of matchups. The ABC prime time game is Utah vs USC.

Well FOX (main channel not FS1 or 2) was dropped from the Uverse lineup in the Southeast the first week of football season. That little move has to have hurt them.

stever, I just don't understand this OCD you have about needing there to be a firm declaration of failure, right now, for FOX as a college football broadcast producer.

We're not even halfway through the first season of a six year experiment with FOX and the Big Ten.

At the moment, is it correct to say that significantly fewer people tend to tune in FOX & FS1 to watch a college football broadcast than tend to tune in ABC & ESPN? Probably ..... but so what???

As you've already said in other posts, a channel brand can't hope to grow its viewership in college football broadcasts if it doesn't have the great games that people want to view. Well, this six year experiment was and is a valid attempt by FOX to obtain more such content.

Give it some time, man ...

are the terms going to change with the Big Ten, giving them the better Big Ten games? I don't think so. ABC/ESPN gets the #1 game of the week in 6 of the 13 weeks. Including the top OOC game every year(given Fox chooses Ohio St/Michigan every year).

I just don't see when there are 5 top leagues and you have
Fox with 1/2 of Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12(all split equally)
ESPN with 1/2 of Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12(all split equally), but then all of the ACC, and then the middle 2/3 of the SEC. Not to mention the top non top 5 leagues as well.

Fox should have spent more money to get a clear #1 stake with the Big Ten. That would have moved the needle. Now, they're getting stuck with games like last Saturday(Ohio St/Maryland) or next Saturday(Maryland/Wisconsin)- while ABC gets Michigan/Michigan St and Michigan/Penn St those weekends.

there's been 5 top 10 games this year with the Big Ten, and all 5 of those were on ABC/ESPN. 4 of them Big Ten Telecasts. 3 of those 4 were telecasts that ESPN/ABC had top choice of the week on.

FOX may never match ESPN in total viewership or the number of top 10 viewership games in a season .... but as you point out, how could it? It has less total games to show.

So again, why do you itch so badly to declare failure for FOX? Why not for CBS? Etc.

Fox had a chance to get more of the Big Ten which would have made it a much more of a real competitor to ESPN.

What I find so absolutely funny is how folks when the deal came out thought that the Fox package was going to be so much stronger than the ESPN package.

Definitely this statement from May isn't true- According to reports, U-M coach Jim Harbaugh participated remotely, calling Fox "the new primary home for Big Ten football."

I just don't think peoples expectations for Fox were realistic at all. They've had a number of problems, and then some horrible luck quite frankly. Stuff like the US missing out now on World Cup, 1st US Open on maybe the worst course ever, ESPN/TNT not allowing Fox to get a foot in NBA. All of those things have to some degree stunted the growth of FS1.

I don't think big businesses work like that -- ie for FOX to make a huge play and bid for the whole package. Plus, don't think that's what the Big Ten wanted anyway. I think they wanted ESPN and other companies to bid up the price for two halves against each other.

Maybe in five more years, FOX will decide it's all in, now or never, and make the Big Ten an offer it can't refuse for the whole enchilada. Or maybe it will pass on bidding altogether. We'll see ...

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
6 years from now will be fascinating. You have Big Ten up, SEC CBS part up, Pac 12 up, and Big 12(or whatever happens with them) up. Plus all the pro sports(which I think for Fox is crucial quite frankly). (and Big East basketball is up around the same time frame).

Fox IMO has to find a way to get FS2 up to speed. That's going to be critical to get more volume.

I just feel for Fox with the Big Ten, it's like they're half way pregnant. I would have really expected for 50 million more to get more than just the Big Ten title game and the Ohio St/Michigan game.

And maybe what needs to be focused on is how great of a deal ESPN got for the Big Ten.
