Yeah, there isn't yet a no brainer/perfect solution (everyone has different tastes), but the good news is that the market is trending in favor of the consumer. If the savings are worth it to you, you just have to put in the time to research the alternatives and go through some trial and error.

If DirectTV was more than 10 bucks a month I'd get rid of them. Being a retired AT&T employee has a couple of advantages I guess.

The channels I like are so random that it's too time consuming to figure out which service offers what. In the end, I just stick with what I have. Not the smartest financial move but it is what it is.

Which channels do you like? I also loaded to youtube app to Roku, amazing how much programming is in youtube for free.

I'll answer, maybe this will give me some direction...

I watch next to No local stuff. Not local news, weekly tv shows or any of that. I'll watch the local affiliate for college ftball game once in a while if it's a "big" game.

Otherwise it's usually news (Fox, fox bus more lately and the others periodically) Nat geo, sci chan, travel, history, Smithsonian, food net, some specific events on msespn (None of the daily stuff anymore), NFL and Red Zone, some golf channel, and that's about all I can come up with.

It does look like that PSVue thing @44.99 could well work, esp if you can then add onesie twosie other channels ala carte.

Is that run through a play station I presume? Will an older PS3. work?

it's reversed. Time is on the Y and channels are on the X.




There's really a lot of cool stuff on that screen.

1. Some networks have a heart icon next to them. Those are channels you select as your favorite. They get thrown to the front of the guide so you don't have to continually scroll.

2. The red horizontal line shows you where you are time-wise in any given show.

3. Blue outline box. That highlights the show you're currently watching.

4. Catch up. Notice some shows have a blue tab that says Catch UP. Even though it's live TV you can start from the beginning (or rewind). You didn't have to DVR it. It just gives you DVR features anyway.

I think I get all of that on the Sling $25 package, maybe not Smithsonian but I have that App on Roku so you can stream some Smithsonian shows. I watch Fox News on youtube for free.

PS Vue originally came out for the PS3 and then PS4.

Since then they've added all popular streaming devices -- even phones and tablets.

Something to think about re: Roku devices. Roku came out before live streaming TV. It shows movies and shows using a TILE design. It never had a reason to display things is a CHANNEL GRID.

Given that, if you use a streaming TV service on a Roku device, you won't have a channel guide. Live TV shows will show up as tiles.

However, Roku is working on updating its interface to provide channel guide layouts. I believe it's already available on Roku TVs, but I don't think it's available on streaming boxes yet.

I have a PS4. Though the remote is great for gaming, it kind of sux for TV. I don't want to use 2 hands when I'm trying to watch TV.

But, there are PS4 TV remotes. The blue buttons on the 2nd row from the top let you program other devices.

I would like to eventually get rid of dish/cable but live in a new neighborhood with no internet options. Literally, there are none that have run to the neighborhood yet. Suddenlink and Century Link are the only two around and neither one of them can tell us when they would. I signed up for Dish and Hughes Net. No other options really.

I haven't even tried to stream Netflix since I've been in the new house, I don't want to disappoint myself too bad with Hughes Net but so far it isn't that bad really. A little slower but still streams YouTube fine.

I cut the cord before, then went back to DirecTV

My lady friend cut the cord so I help her set herself up. She has an antenna so she can watch all of her local channels. She has a roku stick, that I bought for her for $30 and she pays for her internet. She also has an amazon prime subscription. So she is paying about $45 per month or so with her internet and amazon prime subscription.

Yeah you could keep basic cable. Problem is that the channel lineup is horrible. Not good at all for college sports fans.

Sling has a great channel lineup for about 25 bucks but streaming can still be a problem even with the best internet connection.

Yea, well, most of "my" teams aren't on real TV anyway. They seem to be on closed circuit from JMU or on espn3. So that's not too much of a concern. ha.

I'm a soccer nut so I'm looking into fuboTV. Apparently it is expanding beyond sports so I'm going to keep my eye on it.

I cut the cord back in May. Took a little time to adjust, but I am saving $100 per month.

We went with very basic cable (almost nothing but network TV), Amazon Prime (I don't count this since we get it anyway for free shipping), and Netflix. We still do get internet from Cox, but the bill went from $180 to $70. Add the Netflix and it is about $100 per month. We mostly watch old TV shows that we missed the first time around as well as various shows my 8-year old son likes (The Wonder Years, Fuller House, Malcolm in the Middle eg.). NFL games are on the networks and as an ODU fan, college games are mostly streamed from some crappy 5th tier network or school media anyway. College basketball season will probably be an adjustment as that is about all ESPN is good for anymore. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Yeah, I have subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu & Amazon Prime. I didn't count those in the costs/savings because I had them prior to cutting the cord. Same with my internet service.
