But it may be a long time before they get such a golden opportunity again to beat a weak Big Ten team.

Looking back ... it's clear the pace of play gives KSU a bit of an edge against some teams ... BUT THESE DAYS EVERYBODY IN THE MAC PLAYS LIKE THIS ...

while the defense remains solid the offense/special teams still put the D at midfield just about the entire second half ... and it cost Kent the game. Not much has changed there ...

While Barrett looks better than any KENT QB since maybe Edleman throwing the ball ... Like Edelman, he still looks to be a better runner than thrower ... in fact, while the offense was way, way, way more efficient, to me, it really didn't look that much DIFFERENT from the last few seasons.

Improvement made, improvement needed.
Agree - I was disappointed we didn't pull it out - but like many MAC teams - we seemed to wear down in the second half against the deeper Power 5 teams. But what a change from the tired old offense of the last five years and from that game played early in the PH era at Illinois after the weather washed it out. We're going to need plenty of offense judging by the way MAC teams scored the past couple of days. Let's just hope we can stay healthy through the upcoming schedule. Very disappointed to see what we face in 2020 - sure the money is great but why not schedule more beatable teams as do Toledo and others - let's play more teams like Pitt, Rutgers, Kansas or Kansas State (beat South Dakota by a field goal).

Because those teams don't pay like Alabama.

It would be nice to play a softer non-con schedule, but until the department finds another revenue source to replace the money these guarantee games bring in, the football program will continue to be used in this manner. Keep in mind this money is not just used for football. It helps subsidize lower profile sports too. Its a shame really but that's the current reality.

RE: KSU vs. Illinois
I felt whoever lost the QB battle would likely be our starter come Mac season based on recent track record in these non conference games. After watching Barrett play, I really hope I'm wrong. Does anyone know the status of the guys that got hurt yesterday? The only I noticed we're McRae and Mathews.

RE: KSU vs. Illinois
This is exactly how I expected SL to react to the loss. He expects to win. A far cry from PH's ho-hum post-game comments.

"Our team played hard and played with a good attitude, but we need to finish stronger," Head Coach Sean Lewis said. "No moral victories though. We came on this trip to get a victory and we let them off the hook. For year one, game one, it's something we can build upon."

Just saw the Illinois receiver Dudek is out for the year. Didn't even remember him getting hurt.

RE: KSU vs. Illinois
The athletic department posted a couple of facts on their facebook page today about the game. The first being that the 84 plays ran were the most in the last 35 games. The second fact was the 28 completions thrown were the most in the last 37 games. It is sad that it took three years to complete 28 passes.

I'm going to predict we'll top both of those numbers versus Howard. This should be a wide-open game.

1) Kent completed 114 passes last season, not 28.

2) For better or worse, Kent has not had a true 'passing' offense since the days of Jose Davis.

3) If the point is to show Kent's style of play is changing ... so be it. But even in 2012 Kent was more of a judicious passing team, but a determined running team.

Not saying that was better ... just the style that was effective for that team.

The stats were single game stats. But even if they werent only completing 114 passes in a full year is embarrassing.

Yes, Illinois is my second favorite team, so I have followed his career over the past few years. A very talented kid who spent part of his childhood as an OSU fan in the Cleveland area.
