You can't keep a Republic if you don't understand it. You can't keep checks and balances if you don't know what us being checked and balanced. You can't keep people accountable if you don't know what they are accountable for. You can't see people manipulating the system if you don't understand the system.

The trouble we have now is just the start.

Yes...Like basic measurement...people forget this stuff if they don't use it or if it is not reinforced. Funny though....I have not thought about it in years...yet...I instantly knew the answer.07-coffee3

Come on man. Blame the parents not the schools.
I blame the parents for putting up with their taxes going to glorified daycare centers called schools that employ the dumbest effers in our society.

Yes. I blame parents.

Since my wife is a teacher, I'll kindly disagree that schools employ the dumbest effers in our society.

What my wife would tell you is that the kids are getting noticeably worse by the year, but to me it seems about the same as I hear it told every night. Twenty five kids will equal 5 smart ones, 5 idiots, 5 who could do the work but simply elect not to do anything, and 10 kids that are destined to be C students no matter what or how much attention you give them. The smart ones have smarter (college educated or professional type jobs) parents while the others have parents who often say things like "I didn't do good in school either" or "I don't know what to do with him, he don't do his work at home either".

IMO, parents have more influence on a kid's education than teachers. Parents are the keystone. I know for my kids, not matter how hellish of a day I've had, first thing we do when I get home is go over, if needed, any homework, etc. I figure it's the least I can do for my kids. Unfortunately, I feel I may be in the minority.

You are 100% correct. Parents are the major influence in a kids life. If teachers are influencing your child more than you are, then you are doing something wrong.

My mother taught in the public schools for 31 years. I heard her say dozens of times..."My best students always come from families that are involved in their education and push their children to excel."

There's teaching for a test then moving on and then there's teaching and reinforcing.

Easy enough to forget the teach/test.

What they want you to remember and reinforce aren't tested. The leftist indoctrination. The social. The myriad gender identifications others mentioned.

Under teachers job description, the 3 branches of government should be what's reinforced for future voters, not to simply look for the gay tranny minority on the ballot.

The sad state of education.

Standardized testing caused teachers to "teach to the test" due to them being evaluated by the scores. This is a big problem IMO.

Exactly when the problem of stupid students started. Standardized testing and not actual learning. In my time, we had to build our own notebooks from stone but at least we learned a trade doing it.

Seriously, we had testing but they were called "FINALS". That's where the teacher learned whether her teaching was reaching the students. In grade school we had to build volcanoes from flour. We had to make three dimensional topigraphical maps on cardboard, for example.

Guys I have been wanting to post about a workshop I attended over the summer it's called modeling. It was developed by Arizona State University. Total game changer for me and how I viewed science. Do you know how they came up with the scientific method? In the 50's text book publishers surveyed scientist and asked them how they went about doing their job. They received all this feedback and put it into a linear form. Like following a recipe out of a cookbook. That's how I was taught. The reality is so far from that. Science doesn't follow cookbook guidelines. Discovery surely doesn't. The topic deserves its own thread. I share my first two weeks with the spin room and how it has changed me as a teacher.

RE: Only 26 percent of Americans can name the 3 branches of government.
Dr. Torch was right. I used to get in arguments about the characteristics of life. Text books say these are the seven characteristics of life. The reality is it's much greyer than that. The five Kingdoms of life too. It's all a human construct and life just doesn't work that way. There are over 200 accepted scientific definitions of life. Viruses are capable of taking and then copying parts of the DNA of immune systems of other organisms. Textbooks will tell you that viruses are not alive. Some Scientists are making compelling arguments that we should revisit that. The truth of the matter is that science is alive. It's a tool. It's not static and it's always evolving. We double our knowledge base every 9 months. Just by that very fact we shouldn't be teaching out of a text. Ok. Science should be exploratory based. We definitely shouldn't be teaching to any test and we should let the learners develop the construct. This workshop was a total game changer for me. I'll start another thread and just to tell you how in depth my first two weeks have become.
